Any sports fan will have a calendar full of events to follow throughout the year. However, if you want to add more sporting events, we have curated this list for you. 2024 is a big year for domestic and international sports, so if you don’t have a club to follow, you can join in the fans by supporting your country. Here’s a list of events you should keep an eye on.

Africa Cup of Nations, January 13 – February 11

The competition has already started in Ivory Coast and is one of the biggest sporting events this year. It ought to have been played between June and July 2023 but was moved to January 2024 due to climatic conditions, hence its name AFCON 2023. 24 teams are battling for honors in the 34th edition of the competition. Will Senegal retain their title?

Australian Open, January 14 – January 28

It’s the first Grand Slam of the year and is ongoing in Melbourne, Australia. There’s a significant number of African American players in the tournament. From Coco Gauff, Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe and others. A lot of expectation is on Gauff’s shoulders in the women’s singles after winning her first grand slam title at the U.S. Open in 2023.

Super Bowl LVIII, February 11

American football enthusiasts should be looking forward to one of the biggest sporting events in the United States. This will be Super Bowl’s 58th edition and will take place at the Allegiant Stadium. American singer Usher will perform at the halftime show, so if you’re a fan, that’s a bonus for you.

Formula One, February 29 – December 8

Formula One is one of the sporting events you should be excited about. There will be 24 races on the calendar and six sprint races. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are the first two Grand Prix races of the year. Before that, F1 teams will get a chance to do pre-season testing at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain.

NBA Playoffs, April 20 to June

16 teams, eight each from the Eastern and Western conferences will be battling to get to the NBA Finals that will take place between June 6 and 23. The playoffs start after the regular season ends on April 11. 

The first eight round-up matches will happen on April 20 or 21. The conference semi finals will follow on May 6 to 7 and the conference finals on May 21 to 22. After that, the NBA Finals start on June 6 and can go all the way to June 23.

London Marathon, April 21

It’s one of the major marathons in the athletics calendar and is a must-watch. Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptum is the reigning champion and world record holder in the men’s marathon. In the women’s event, Sifa Hassan won last year’s event. The field will be as competitive as it’s always been.

Women’s Champions League Final, May 25

Spanish side Barcelona Women are the current holders of the title. They will be hoping to go to San Mames Stadium in Bilbao. 

That said, other top European sides like Olympique Lyon Women, Wolfsburg Women and Chelsea Women will hope to get to the finals. The tournament has been competitive in recent years, especially with Lyon not going all the way to the final.

UEFA Europa League and Conference League Finals 

Football lovers have a lot of top-tier matches to look forward to. The finals of the other European competitions will be in May, with the Europa League happening on the 22 and the Conference League finals on the 29th.

Men’s Champions League Finals, June 1

The biggest club competition in men’s football heads to the Wembley Stadium. English side Manchester City finally won the cup in 2023 to complete the treble. 

It was the club’s first European trophy, a title they’ve been chasing and one of the reasons they hired Spanish manager Pep Guardiola. Can they do it again and can an English club reign supreme on home soil?

Euro 2024, June 14 – July 14

Some players of African descent will be playing in the event, the biggest international tournament in European football. The event will take place in Germany, the first major football event since the 2006 World Cup. It’s poised to be an event to watch out for any football fan.

The French Open, May 26 to June 9

The clay court season climaxes at Roland Garros where the best battle it out in the second grand slam event of the year. A large number of black or African American players will be on the court so keep the dates noted on your calendar. 

Olympic Games, 26 July – August 11

France will take center stage when the Olympics come around in the summer. It’s by far the biggest sporting event of the year and most athletes are making their preparations with this in mind. When the game starts, it’ll be obvious but make a space for it.
