5 Famous African-American Soccer Players Representing the United States

Soccer is increasingly gaining traction in the United States. Some of the best African-American soccer players represent the U.S. at international tournaments and play in Europe or the ever-growing Major League Soccer (MLS). The number of black players in the team has increased since the first-ever player of color, Eddie Hawkins, got a call-up. In this article, we highlight more players who’ve followed after Eddie.

Chris Richards

Chris Richards plays his club football at Crystal Palace in England. Previously, the left-back cum left-winger has played for Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim. Although he doesn’t have significant game time, he’s done enough to get a U.S. national team call-up. 

Richards played for the United States youth teams, the U20 and U23 before he got his senior call-up in 2020. He’s played 14 games but is yet to feature in the World Cup.

DeAndre Yedlin,

Yedlin joins the list of African-American soccer players on the country’s roster. He debuted for the national team in 2014 during a friendly match against South Korea. He’s accumulated 81 caps. 

He was part of the team during the 2016 and 2019 CONCACAF competitions and the 2014, & 2022 FIFA World Cups. At club level, Yedlin plays for Inter Miami in the MLS.

Timothy Weah

Timothy Weah is one of the African-American soccer players on the team. His parents are Liberian but went to the United States for work and to give their children a good life.

Weah took after his father, George Weah, considered one of the best African footballers. He’s an exciting winger with pace and trickery of skill, currently playing for Juventus. Weah has played 35 games and scored 5 goals.

Zack Steffen

Steffen plays for Premier League side Manchester City. He started his youth career at West Chester Field and joined FC Delco before moving to Philadelphia Union. 

In college, Steffen played for Maryland Terrapins and then went to Europe to further his career. The goalkeeper signed for a year for German side SC Freiburg II and then went back home to join Colombus Crew SC. After a loan spell at Pittsburgh, he joined Man City.

Internationally, he came through the youth ranks of the American team. He started at the U18 level, then U20 and U23. In 2018, Steffen first appeared for the United States against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Weston Kennie

Kennie is one of the African-American soccer players fans are looking up to. He’s an important player on the team, having scored 11 goals in his 49 appearances. He scored on his debut against Portugal.

Since then, he’s been to the CONCACAF Games, and in 2022, he went to his first FIFA World Cup. At club level, Kennie’s played for European teams like Schalke 04 and Juventus
