Bukayo Saka is English but he was born to Nigerian parents in England. He grew up in a relatively well-off family that loved football. His parents fully supported his quest for a footballing career. His father helped him to secure a trial at Arsenal which he passed and joined the academy. 

Saka’s academic ability is great. He graduated with four A*s and three As, which shows that even though he was pursuing an athletic career, his family ensured he remained grounded and balanced in his life.

Football Career

During his academy days, Bukayo Saka worked closely with Arsenal’s legend Freddie Ljungberg, who guided him and helped him to stay focused and grounded. His advice worked well for him as he got a professional contract at the age of 17 under former Arsenal manager Unai Emery and was promoted to the under-23 side. 

After a while, Bukayo Saka was recruited into the senior team. He competed with other established players like Aaron Ramsey and Alex Iwobi so he had to prove himself to get a spot. Every time he played, Saka took his chances and after the departure of Ramsey and Iwobi, he made the wing position his. 

His debut for Arsenal came in the Europa League. His Premier League debut was against Fulham and the player grew from strength to strength. At the age of 18, he was the youngest player to play for the club in the Premier League.

Breakthrough and Development

His first goal came against Frankfurt in the Europa League. He scored crucial goals in the FA Cup and also provided assists to teammates. In 2020, Saka was given a long-term deal at Arsenal, earning praise from club manager Mikel Arteta.

His first Premier League goal came in July 2020 against Wolverhampton Wanderers. His rise continued and in the 2020/21 season, he won a couple of individual awards including the Premier League Player of the Month and the Arsenal Player of the Month.

Named Player of the Season Twice

In 2021, he became the second-youngest player in Arsenal’s history to play 50 Premier League games for Arsenal. By the end of the season, Saka had seven goals and assists and was named the Arsenal Player of the Season.  

The following year, Saka won more awards. He was Arsenal’s top scorer with 10 goals and for the second season, was named Arsenal Player of the Season, and was the first player to retain the award since Thiery Henry in 2003.

The winger was also nominated for the following awards:

  • Premier League Player of the Season
  • Premier League Young Player of the Season
  • PFA Young Player of the Year

100th Premier League Start

In the 2022/23 season, Bukayo Saka made his 100th Premier League start and was the second youngest player to achieve this feat. In Arsenal’s quest to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2003/2004, he scored important goals. 

One of them was a long-range shot against Manchester United that was voted Arsenal’s Goal of the Month. His performance throughout the season saw him win the Men’s Young Player of the Year at the London Football Awards in 2023 and won the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Saka continues to make his mark in the team, surpassing the 50th goal-scoring mark. This made him the youngest Arsenal player to do so.

International Career

Bukayo Saka came through the junior England sides to the senior team. He received his first call-up in 2020, debuting against Wales in a 3-0 win. He was part of the Euro 2020 team that lost to Italy in the finals. Saka was named the Men’s England Player of the Year and was the first Arsenal Player to win the award. 

Arsenal fans are excited about Bukayo Saka’s future. Many see him as a future leader of the team as he has grown from an academy to a senior player.
