As a child, you probably saw a variety of stories and movies about fictional heroes, from folktales to epic fantasy films. Humanitarians didn’t appear in those stories, but they’re the real VIPs of unsung heroic stories.
In accordance with a press release issued by the UN on June 21, 2023, there are 360 million people in need of humanitarian aid worldwide, an increase of 30% since the beginning of the previous year.
It emphasized that over 110 million individuals have been ejected from their homes. And over 260 million people face acute food insecurity, including famine.
This year’s World Humanitarian Day (WHD) builds on the theme, The Human Race with the slogan It takes a village! This is a collective effort to grow global appreciation of humanitarian work due to the record-high humanitarian needs around the world.

History of World Humanitarian Day
22 humanitarian aid workers, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, died in a bombing at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, on August 19, 2003.
Five years later, World Humanitarian Day (WHD) was declared on August 19 by the United Nations General Assembly.
WHD focuses on a specific theme each year and brings together partners from various industries of the humanitarian sector to raise awareness, promote well-being, and ensure aid workers’ safety and security.
