How to Speak Swahili Easily in 6 Steps

Knowing the dos and don’ts of learning a new language will help you avoid pitfalls that might hinder your progress. Here’s what you should do.

  1. Have clear goals. Understand why you’re learning Swahili. Is it for business, tourism or general interest? It’ll help you stay focused.
  2. Listening will help you know the pronunciation and use of different words.
  3. Avoid translating words to your native language because the context in which they’re used varies.
  4. Expose yourself to the language. If you love swimming, for example, take swimming lessons taught entirely in Swahili.
  5. Avoid perfection. When learning how to speak Swahili, you might pressure yourself to be perfect from the word go. However, you can start by picking up basic Swahili phrases. And when you make mistakes, don’t worry, you’ll polish up your skills with time.
  6. Practise. It’s the only way to become fluent in Swahili. So, find native speakers to talk to. Join activities that will expose you to the language.
