The impact of Britain’s colonial footprint in the Caribbean can be manifested through sport. The Brits introduced some of the region’s most popular sports – cricket and football. As a result, this saw some people migrate to the United Kingdom to play and eventually settle.

Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain
Alex-Oxlade was born in England to an English mother and a Jamaican father. His grandparents emigrated to the United Kingdom in search of a better life. He grew up in Portsmouth and spent his youth career in Southampton.
From there, he moved to Arsenal and Liverpool before he joined his current club Besiktas. Chamberlain has played for the England national team 35 times. He made his debut in 2012.

Isaac Hayden
Isaac Hayden was born in England to an English father and a Jamaican mother. This makes him legible to represent both countries in international football. So far, he’s represented England in the junior levels but is yet to make his senior debut for the Three Lions.
He desired to play for them but also expressed interest in playing for Jamaica. The president of the Jamaica Football Federation, Michael Ricketts, said he called him to get the process underway.

Ivan Toney
The English-Jamaican footballer was born in Northampton, England. Both of his parents come from the Caribbean. His mother is Jamaican and his father is from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Toney received his first international call-up with England in 2022 and has played in one match. Before this, the Jamaica Football Federation tried to lure him to play for them but he waited for his chance to play for his country of birth.

Kyle Walker
Kyle Walker is of mixed race. His father, Michael Walker, is Jamaican, and his mother is English. The player was born in Sheffield, United Kingdom. He started his career in Sheffield and rose through the ranks to now playing for Manchester City.
He’s played for the Three Lions 76 times, debuting in 2011 against Spain. Kyle was part of the squad that played in the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.

Mason Holgate
Mason Holgate was born in the United Kingdom on 22 October 1996. Although brought up in Doncaster, he traces his roots to Jamaica. According to reports, the footballer draws his Caribbean heritage from his grandparents.
His father, though Jamaican, is believed to have been born in England. Holgate represented England at U20 and U21 levels but is yet to play for the senior team. He’s open to representing Jamaica in international tournaments.

Nathan Redmond
The footballer was born in Birmingham, England. Although little is known about his parents, he’s of Irish and Jamaican descent. His mother, Michelle Redmond, is white, but details of her background aren’t in the public domain. Redmond has only one cap for the Three Lions and has played at the U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels.
Raheem Sterling
The English forward was born in Kingston, Jamaica, to Jamaican parents. At the age of 6, he emigrated to the United Kingdom with his mother. There, he continued with his passion for the game, a journey that’s now made him one of the best footballers in the world.
He’s represented the Three Lions 82 times and was part of the 2014, 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup squads.
