Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the Caribbean. The region, known as the West Indies in international tournaments, is a powerhouse in the game. They’ve won major tournaments like the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup.

This level of success means the Caribbean has resources that allow its players to flourish. Some of the best cricket stadiums in the world are found here. In this list, we’re looking at the best cricket stadiums in the Caribbean. 

Kensington Oval – Barbados

Kensington Oval is the oldest cricket ground in Barbados. It was founded in 1882 and has received great honours. Sir Garfield Sobers described it as the world’s greatest cricket ground. This cricket ground has hosted some iconic events; the first English test between England and Australia occurred here. 

In 1930, the first West Indies test match happened here. In 2007, some of the ICC World Cup games were played here. Later in 2010, the ICC World Twenty20 Final was played here. The Kensington Oval has a capacity of 28,000.

Queen’s Park Oval – Trinidad and Tobago

The Queen’s Park Oval cricket stadium is among the best in the Caribbean. It was put up in 1896 and has a capacity of 25,000. In 1930, the first test match was played on this ground between Trinidad & Tobago and England. 

Since then, it’s hosted other big events like the first One Day International (ODI) in 1983 between West Indies and India. In 2007, the Queen’s Park Oval hosted some of the 2007 World Cup games. 

Sabina Park – Jamaica

Sabina Park is another outstanding international cricket ground. It’s located in Kingston and is home to Kingston Cricket Club. The ground was opened in 1895 and is characterised by its bouncy, hard and fast-paced wickets. The first test match was played at Sabina Park in 1930. Over the years, some of the greatest feats in the game have been accomplished here.

The first Triple Century in the game was recorded here. English cricketer Andy Sandham hit 325 against the West Indies. Sir Garfield Sobers hit 356 not out, a 36-year test record happened on this ground and Lawrence Row hit double centuries on his debut. Sabina Park has a capacity of 20,000.

Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium – Saint Lucia

If there’s one cricket ground you should make a point of visiting when you’re in the Caribbean, it’s this one. Daren Sammy is surrounded by hills and provides a perfect view for your Instagram pictures. The facility can hold a maximum of 15,000. The first test match played on this ground took place in 2003. 

The ground was originally called the Beausejour Cricket Ground but was renamed the Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium. This happened after Daren Sammy captained the West Indies to win the 2012 and 2016 ICC World Twenty20. 

Sir Vivian Richards Stadium – Antigua

The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium was built in 2007 in the lead-up to the 2007 ICC World Cup. The facility is named after a great West Indies cricketer, Viv Richards. It’s located in North Stand Antigua. This small-capacity stadium of 10,000 cost around $60 million. Some of the facilities found here are: 

  • Two stands
  • Practise pitch
  • Media Centre
  • Training infrastructure 
  • Underground passageways
