Most people in women’s football wouldn’t have predicted that Racheal Kundananji would one day be the most expensive signing in the history of the game. Even though her rise in the game has happened within a short period, most would think of a more established player.

Kundanaji is one of Zambia’s fast-rising female soccer players. She’s a member of the Zambia women’s national football team, the Copper Queens, and has been instrumental in their performances. How did she become the most expensive signing in women’s football? Keep reading.

Racheal Kundanaji was born in Zambia in 2000. Not much is known about her personal life but her football journey is documented.

She started her career in Zambia playing for Konkola Queens and later moved to Indeni Roses, where she played in the regional Copperbelt Women’s League. She made 18 starts and scored 21 goals. 

After a year, she moved to Kazakhstan side BIIK Kazygurt, when she admitted in an interview with The ZMB Talks, that she desired to play for one of the country’s biggest teams, the Green Buffaloes Football Club.

Moving to Europe

However, she opted for the move abroad because she would earn and build and stable life away from home. She stayed there for two years but didn’t get enough game time. The forward played 10 games and scored only eight goals. Despite that, she helped the team to win the league championship consecutively. 

Kundanaji was on the move again, this time to Spain where she joined Eibar in the Primera Iberdrola, the Spanish Women’s League. In her only season, she played 21 matches and netted eight goals. The striker was on the move again and joined Madrid CFF where she finally showed her scoring prowess. 

Kundananji found the back of the net 25 times in 29 games and was the second-highest top scorer in the league.

Most Expensive Female Player

Kundnanji has been preparing for big moments like this. She’s grown from strength to strength and finally, has her place and recognition. 

After a stellar season, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) expansion team Bay FC, made Kundananji the most expensive female football player. They paid Eibar $787, 800 in a contract that keeps her at the club until 2027, with an option to extend for another year. She’s the first African player to break the football world transfer record.

Previously, England footballer Keira Walsh was the most expensive female footballer after her transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona which cost the former £400,000.

International Career

Internationally, Racheal Kundandaji is part of Zambia’s team and one of its key players. She’s represented the country in international competitions including its first 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament in Australia & New Zealand. 

She was part of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations team in 2018 and the 2020 Summer Olympics team. However, she was barred from competing in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022 due to high testosterone levels. 

Racheal Kundananji has earned what she has today. From her local clubs in her hometown to playing in major women’s leagues in Europe and America, she has a long way to go. Big price tags come with great expectations so we’ll see whether she’ll match that.
