One of the most critical New Year resolutions for couples is financial management. Setting financial goals as a couple can be rewarding. However,  it requires open communication and collaboration.

First, provide a safe space for candid conversation. Second, understand your current financial landscape and be transparent about financial fears, goals, and aspirations.

You can also come up with individual and shared financial goals for the short-, medium-, and long-term. For example:

  • Point out if there are debts and how you’re going to pay them off
  • Agree on how to build an emergency fund
  • If you want to own a house, outline how you can save for it
  • Plan and save for your retirement
  • Plan and save for vacations

Create a budget and action plan. Above everything else, let your goals be SMART

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound.

For instance, instead of saying, “Save more money,” put it as  “Increase monthly savings by 10% to reach a $5,000 emergency fund by June.”

To stay on track, schedule regular check-ins to discuss progress, challenges, and any necessary adjustments. Be flexible and willing to adapt your plan as circumstances change. And don’t forget to Celebrate successes and milestones together to stay motivated.

Learn how to consume foods packed with nutrients that’ll keep you feeling energized and satisfied. Can you imagine how fun it would be to make meal prep a fun date night or weekend activity? Not only will you be connecting, but also you’ll have healthy meals ready to go throughout the week.

As you do all the planning, don’t deprive yourselves. Rather, allow for occasional treats and indulgences. Deprivation can lead to cravings and binge eating. Enjoy your favorite foods in moderation.
