Who is Karen Arrington?

Karen Arrington is an award-winning author, empowerment coach, Goodwill Ambassador to Sierra Leone, philanthropist and the founder of the Miss Black USA pageant. 

Underneath these titles lies an undeniable portfolio that demonstrates her with to mentor girls and women, scale up businesses, create awareness and build a lasting legacy of service. Karen has one open secret to her tremendous success: travel.

Karen Arrington’s Travels

One of the things that stands out from Karen Arrington’s journey is her travel history. She’s been to numerous countries, including Spain, Egypt, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Unlike most people who travel for individual or business reasons, Karen Arrington is on a mission. This is seen by the legacy in different places. 

In Gambia, the first country she travelled to, she helped start a Diabetes Awareness Day that’s celebrated to this day. This sparked her interest in helping women scale their businesses to an international audience. She shared part of that experience with Travel+Leisure.

“The moment I touched African soil, my entire life changed. I led 100 women in the Gambia where we engaged the community in different initiatives one of which led to the building of a primary school. The locals were amazed.” Karen Arrington said. 

She’s also helped some African American women secure scholarships to beauty pageants and organised a trip dubbed the ‘power trip’ for 100 women to visit the Middle East. 

Why is Karen Arrington interested in travel and advises women to have it as part of their growth strategy? Speaking to Travel+Leisure, she talks about the transformative power of travelling.

“Travel is a tremendous investment in your life and career. It’s a chance to prepare yourself for greater and deeper work. You will be challenged, inspired and transformed. It opens up a whole new world of opportunities to utilize your talents, stretch your imagination, champion a cause, and expand your global network.”

Additionally, Karen shares a few tips in her book, Your Next Level Life, on including travel as part of your career. 

“Step outside your comfort zone. Choose a destination that is unfamiliar and strikes your curiosity. This will help you to gain new perspectives, develop patience, and maybe pick up a new language.”
