We hear a lot about the best-performing teams in the world. Rarely do we hear about the worst. Whenever the football governing body FIFA releases its rankings, most people focus on the top 10 or 20 teams, but the bottom end of the table is rarely discussed. This is what we are here to do. We’ll evaluate the worst national soccer teams in the world and explain why they are.

Eritrea
Eritrea is one of the world’s worst national soccer teams. Out of 211 member associations, it’s the only unranked. Inactive teams get unranked and Eritrea hasn’t been participating in international football since January 2020. The team withdrew from the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers. Political instability has crippled the sport as the country fears that players going on international duty won’t return.

Bahamas
The Bahamas sits at position 200 on the FIFA World rankings. The country isn’t known for its pedigree in football although it’s active in the FIFA international window. In the last five years, its highest rank to date is 195 and its lowest is 210. Lesley St. Fleur has the most caps for the national team with 36.

Somalia
The Somalia U-17 national football team provides a ray of hope for the country’s football, after its participation in the Africa Cup of Nations. It was the country’s first entry into the event. The country’s highest ranking was 194 in 2023 and its lowest 204. Political upheavals have interfered with the country’s growth and development of football.

Seychelles
Seychelles adds to our list of the worst national soccer teams. It’s ranked 197th in the world. In the last five years, their highest position was 195 and the lowest 202. The country is making efforts to help the team improve its ranking but is still languishing outside the top 100 countries. They are competitive and lastly lost 5-0 to Kenya in a World Cup qualifying match.

Tonga
Tongans are known for their flair in rugby union and compete at the highest level. However, when it comes to soccer, they’re ranked as one of the worst national soccer teams in the world. Currently, Tonga lies in 201 position.
They lost both games during the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Nations Cup qualification and the last time they won a match was during the 2023 Pacific Games against American Samoa. Before American Samoa, they had the record of the largest international defeat, after Australia annihilated them 22-0.

American Samoa
American Samoa holds the record of losing an international match with the largest score margin. In April 2001, they lost 31-0 to Australia, and Archie Thompson scored 13 goals. The country struggles to produce quality players as most choose to represent the United States.
Furthermore, American Samoans identify as U.S. nationals. This leaves them with a small pool of players who can’t compete with countries with a large population providing a wide pool of selection. The country has mastered only two victories.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is known for its prowess in cricket but that’s not the case with soccer. Originally, they were referred to as the Ceylon national football team and played their first match against India, losing 2-0. In April 2008, they registered their biggest win 7-1 against Pakistan and 6-0 against Bhutan. The country’s biggest defeat is a 21-1 loss against East Germany. The team is ranked 204 in the world.
These are some of the worst national soccer teams in the world. These countries have poor infrastructure that stunts the growth and development of the game. In others, soccer isn’t the national sport and hence many people opt for other games such as cricket or baseball.
