The aim of competitive football is to win trophies, at club and national team levels. Some trophies are more coveted than others, although monetarily, it doesn’t show the true value. This happens because of the prestige attached to certain competitions. In this article, you’ll find out the most expensive football trophies in the game.

English Premier League Trophy – $10,000

Every football player in England dreams of winning the English Premier League. It’s the most prestigious title in the country, given to the team that wins the top flight. The trophy was first awarded in 1992/93, the first Premier League season.

The trophy is 3 feet 5 inches or 104 cm tall and is 2 feet or 61cm wide. It weighs 4 stones or 25.4 kilograms in total. The base, which has the name of the champions, consists of malachite and weighs 2.5 stones or 15.9 kilograms.

The trophy design reflects the theme of English football, “The Three Lions of English football”. Hence the two lions on top of the handles. The team that gets the most points after 38 league games wins it. Manchester City is the current holder of this title, and have now won it four times consecutively.

UEFA Champions League Trophy – $15,000

The UEFA Champions League trophy is the biggest prize in Europe given to the best team in club football. The trophy becomes the property of any team that wins it three times consecutively.

The current version is its fifth iteration. It was first commissioned in 1967 by former UEFA Secretary General Hans Bangerter and designed by Jürg Stadelmann. The artist took 340 hours to finish the trophy. It weighs 7.5 kilograms and is 73.5 centimetres tall.

Real Madrid is the most successful in the competition with 14 trophies.

Bundesliga Meisterschale – $57,102

The Bundesliga shield adds to our list of the most expensive trophies in football. Many football fans make fun of its bowl design, but it’s the pride of any player in the Bundesliga. Renowned art professor Elisabeth Treskow designed the trophy which carries the names of all German champions.

It consists of five 71.98-carat tourmaline cabochons, encased in gold and silver rings. It weighs 11 kilograms. The trophy has space to carry the names of more winners until 2027. Its insurance is worth €50,000.

Serie A Trophy – $60,000

At $60,000, the Serie A trophy also known as the Scuddeto ranks seventh in our list of the most expensive trophies in football. The top-ranked Italian club wins this title. The Scudetto means a little shield in Italian and was a political tool which evolved to become part of Italian football.

Ettore Calvelli designed the trophy in 1960 and consists of a blue sodalite base and gold rings. It’s 58cm tall and weighs 8kg. Juventus has won the most and Inter Milan are the current champions, having won it against bitter rivals AC Milan.

Africa Cup of Nations Trophy – $150,000

The African Cup of Nations trophy, previously referred to as the trophy of African Unity, is the biggest in African football. The original trophy called the Abdelaziz Abdallah Salem Trophy, named after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) first president. Ghana won the tournament thrice and permanently retained the trophy.

The second AFCON trophy was used between 1980 and 2000. Cameroon retained it after winning three titles. The current version was designed in Italy and first awarded to Cameroon in 2002. Egypt won it three times but was given a replica. 

It’s 8 kilograms and stands at 60 centimeters.

Ballon d’Or Trophy – $805,438

The Ballon d’Or, the French word for the golden ball is the most coveted individual award a player wins. French news magazine France Football has presented the award since 1956. French Jewell house Francois Mellerio designed the trophy which carries the FIFA Ballon d’Or logo. However, it’s now known as the Ballon d’Or after its partnership with FIFA ended in 2016. 

From afar, it’s easy to think it’s entirely made of gold. However, part is made of wax-like material, brass plates shaped like a football held by iron pyrite and covered in five kilograms of 18-carat gold.

The trophy weighs 7 kilograms, is 31cm tall and 23cm wide. The winners get a replica version of the trophy. Argentine striker Lionel Messi and Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo have won the most Ballon d’Or.

FA Cup Trophy – $1.18 million

The Football Association Challenge Cup, fondly called FA Cup is the oldest football tournament in England. Bradford jeweller Fattorini designed the trophy used until 1992 when the modern era of English football started. The current FA Cup is a replica of the previous trophy to preserve its rich history. Thomas Lyte designed the trophy.

UEFA Europa League Trophy – $4.5 million

The Europa League is given to the winner of the second-tier club competition in Europe. Its trophy is even more valuable than the Champions League and is also heavier. It doesn’t have handles but its unique design makes it stand out. 

It’s 65cm tall, 33cm wide and 23cm deep. It weighs 15 kilograms. Bertoni workshop in Milan, Italy crafted this piece. In 2015, Sevilla was given the trophy after winning it three times in a row and five times.

Copa Libertadores Trophy – $8.5 million

The Copa Libertadores trophy is the second most expensive trophy in world football. Copa Libertadores de América competition is the most valuable in South America, awarded to the best team in the continent. An Italian immigrant Alberto de Gasperi, with guidance from ex-CONMEBOL board member Teofilo Salinas.

The trophy is made of silver-coated bronze with the bottom half consisting of hardwood plywood, a base for which the badges of the champions are engraved. At first, it only accommodated 18 entries and has been revised to carry more names. The current trophy will be revised after 2024.

The FIFA World Cup Trophy – $20 million

The FIFA World Cup is the most expensive trophy in world football. It’s the most coveted price in world football, awarded every four years to the winners of the World Cup. There have been two versions of the trophy. 

The first trophy, known as the Jules Rimet Cup, was in use between 1930 and 1970. Brazil earned the permanent title after winning the cup three times. French sculptor Abel Lafleur designed the piece, with gold-plated sterling silver and semi-precious stone.

Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga received a commission to redesign the trophy. It’s 36.5 cm tall, made of 75% gold, 6.175 kg of 18 carats (75%) gold. The base consists of two layers of malachite.

No country gets to keep this trophy. Instead, the winning country gets the FIFA World Cup Winners’ Trophy. Argentina is the current holder of the trophy.
