The best tennis matches of all time put fans on the edge of their seats. They were tightly contested, played over several hours and of high quality. It’s a tough list to compose as plenty of games fit this description. The grand slams bring out the best in the players whom we remember longer for their performance in these matches. Here’s our list.

Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djoković Semi-Final French Open, 2013

Dubbed the King of Clay, Nadal entered this match as the French Open defending champion who had won seven of the last eight titles. Djokovic was on form and Nadal had a chance to avenge his loss to the Serb in Australia. Both players displayed great tennis, with hard hits down each other’s end, not allowing for a gap to develop. Eventually, Nadal reigned supreme and won the game and another French Open tennis.

Andy Murray vs Novak Djokovic, Wimbledon Final 2013

Andy Murray became the first British tennis player to win a Wimbledon title since Fed Perry. He won against Djokovic in straight sets 6-4 7-5 6-4. It sounds like he had an easy time, but that wasn’t the case. Murray dropped three championship points but was saved by a weak Djokovic shot to claim the title in front of home fans.

He admitted to being nervous in the game but eventually overcame it to win the game. This piece of history makes this one of the greatest tennis matches of all time.

Novak Djokovic vs Roger Federer U.S. Open Semi-Final 2010

Although Djokovic had trouble with his serve, he was playing well but many didn’t expect him to succeed in entering into the tournament. However, the Serb made his way into the semis, setting up a showdown against the Swiss. 

Federer was the favorite to win the match but Djokovic wanted the win as well. Both produced an epic battle which went on until the fifth set. At 5-4, the Serb saved two crucial match points, broke Federer’s serve and won the match. He lost to Nadal in the final.

John Isner vs Nicolas Mahut Wimbledon First Round, 2010

Not all best matches of all time involve the big names and John Isner vs Nicolas Mahut is a good example. This is the longest match in tennis history having taken 11 hours and 5 minutes over 183 games. The fifth set alone took 8 hours and 11 minutes and was played over three days.

The tennis world has yet to see anything like this again, which is the primary reason the game makes it into the best matches list. Most first-round games hardly capture the imagination as this did. 

Eventually, John Isner won the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68.

Rafael Nadal vs Roger Federer Wimbledon Final, 2008

Two of the greatest tennis players met on Center court in the 2008 Wimbledon final. Federer was a grass court specialist and had won the previous five events so he was the favorite. However, Nadal was more than ready to spoil the party. 

They both stretched into the fifth set, even though the Spaniard could have sealed the title in the fourth set. Eventually, he served the match out to win his first Wimbledon title, the scoreline reading 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7.

It was a close match, with both players not giving each other space to get a landslide victory. The twists and turns make this one of the best tennis matches of all time.

Venus Williams vs Lindsay Davenport Wimbledon Final, 2005

By the time Venus Williams played in the 2005 Wimbledon, critics didn’t consider her a threat. After all, a young tennis player eliminated her in the French Open. However, Venus kept that aside and focused on her matches. She reached the semis and played against Maria Sharapova who was the defending champion.

Williams defeated her 6-2, 6-1 to progress to the final where she faced Lindsay Davenport. She was a physical match to her and managed to keep her on the back foot. After losing the first set, Williams recovered winning the second set and took it to a tie-breaker.

Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova produced some of the best moments in women’s tennis and this was one of them. Sharapova took the first set but Serena wouldn’t make it easy in the next and forced a third. 

Going into the second set, the Russian seemed to be within reach of the final but Serena clawed back. She was 5-3 up with three match points and lost all. The American won the second set and pushed the game into a final and won the match 2-6, 7-5, 8-6. Serena won the women’s singles title in Australia.

Monica Seles vs Steffi Graf French Open Finals, 1992

Steffi Graf is considered the best female tennis player of all time. This was a battle of world number one (Seles) and world number two (Graff). It’s one of the most highly anticipated matches in the game.

It lived up to expectations as both took leads in the match. Seles had a strong start before Graff asserted herself. However, the young player came back to win the game 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.
