Brazil is the most successful country in international football. They’ve won five world cups, first coming in 1958, then 1962, 1970, 1994, and the last in 2002. This dominance is due to the country’s ability to produce outstanding players continuously.

From the likes of Pele, Kaka, Ronaldinho, and Neymar, the list is endless. All of them play similarly, with flair, speed, close control, and charisma. What makes Brazilian footballers so good?

Population of Brazil

Brazil is one of the most populous nations on earth. As of 2023, it has over 214 million people. With so many people playing football, the country will likely always have a group of people playing and selecting from.

Chances are that you’ll have an easy time spotting gems and nurturing them. It’s also important to remember that football is akin to religion in Brazil.

Futsal

Futsal is a variation of football played indoors and in a smaller space. The game has fewer players and the tightness forces players to think and act quickly.

Additionally, futsal requires that you learn how to control the ball closely with your feet. When asked about the impact of futsal on Brazilian footballers, the late Pele had this to say

“Futsal makes you think fast and play fast. It makes everything easier when you later switch to football.”

These aspects explain why Brazilian footballers play with so much flair. Their creativity, dribbling, shooting and passing is a cut above the rest and makes them stand out.

Culture of Football

Football is embedded in Brazilian culture.  It’s the most popular cultural activity in the country. Kids and elderly people spend so much time playing and watching the game. At one point in the country’s history, football was only played by the white elite.

That changed with the abolition of slavery and it became a sport for everyone. This led to the game being played on the street, another breeding ground for Brazilian footballers.

One of the country’s most passionate moments is during the World Cups and when local derbies are played. Tempers, flair, and skill are displayed, fans turn out in large numbers and the entire nation stops.

Winning Habit

Brazilians are used to being at the top of world football. This is why there’s a lot of pressure on the team to win. Wearing that jersey is the epitome of success for a Brazilian footballer and you can see this by the way they belt out the national anthem.

Moreover, Brazilians don’t just win games, they do so playing samba football. It’s the identity of Brazilian football. It’s also college ‘Ginga’, which means swing in English.

Why is Brazil so good at football? It combines the things we’ve discussed above and potentially more. Nonetheless, the world enjoys watching Brazil and we hope they’ll continue entertaining us with samba football.
