The 2024 UEFA Super Cup between Real Madrid and Atalanta is scheduled for 14 August. Madrid is the reigning Champions League winner and Atalanta of the UEFA Europa League. The game will be played at a neutral venue, the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland. This will be the Los Blancos ninth appearance in the tournament, which they have won five times and lost thrice.

Meanwhile, Atalanta will play its first UEFA Super Cup and is the 41st team to feature in the competition. Will they add to the list of the UEFA Super Cup winners? These are its previous winners.

Real Madrid

Madrid will aim to lift its sixth UEFA Super Cup title to become the most successful club in the competition. It first won the tournament in 2002 against Feyenoord and won its next after 12 years against Sevilla. In 2016, Madrid played its Spanish rival again and won for a second time. From there, the club has played in four of the last seven ties and lost one to Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona

Barcelona, a five-time winner of the UEFA Super Cup, has the most appearances, with nine. Its former player, Dani Alves, has the most wins and appearances as a player. 2015 was the last time they featured in the competition, which is also the last time it won the Champions League. They beat Sevilla and, in their previous meetings, triumphed against Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen. 

AC Milan

AC Milan lifted the trophy in the 90s and early 2000s when it dominated Europe. Its last UEFA Super Cup title came in 2007 against Sevilla, when it also won its last Champions League. Since then, the Italian club has found it difficult to hit these heights. The club has faced several challenges that have contributed to its downfall, including poor recruitment, incompetent management and lack of meaningful resources to keep it competitive.

Liverpool

Liverpool fans will never forget the 2019 season when they conquered Europe in style. Former manager Jurgen Klopp’s gegenpressing eventually bore fruit after falling short to Real Madrid the previous year. Consequently, the club earned its fourth appearance in the UEFA Super Cup and beat English rivals Chelsea. Before that, Liverpool was holding onto the memories of 2005, 2001 and 1997.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico is more often than not the neutral’s favorite in Europe. After clinching the Europa League in 2018, they faced arch-rivals, Real Madrid, in this tournament, clinching the title. The other two times it won the competition were in 2012 and 2010. 

Ajax

Ajax has long stopped being one of Europe’s dominant clubs. It was the first to win this title in 1973 and repeated its heroics in 1995, the last time it won the Champions League. The Dutch club continues to churn out some of the best players in Europe, like Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong.

Chelsea

If you are a Chelsea fan, 2012 and 2021, because of the club’s Champions League and UEFA Super Cup victories. In 2012, it was the best team in Europe, with players like Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Jose Mourinho as its coach. In 2021, it wasn’t expected to win the title because the club was underperforming, but Thomas Tuchel turned things around.

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich has been the UEFA Super Cup winner twice, despite winning the Champions League six times. The German club conquered the Super Cup in 2020 and 2013 and runners up three times, 1975, 1976 and 2001. You might find this outcome surprising, considering they lost against Anderlecht and Dynamo Kyiv in the first two. 

The other teams who’ve won the UEFA Super Cup titles include Juventus, Valencia, Manchester City, Manchester United, Porto, Aston Villa and Anderlecht.
