Jamaican footballer Khadija Shaw is one of the fastest-rising female footballers in the world. She’s separated herself from other players by how she plays. It’s even admirable, considering she comes from a country with few resources. The forward signed for English club Manchester City in 2021 and received a two-year contract that’ll see her play for the citizens until 2026.

Khadija Shaw’s Background
Shaw was born on 31 January 1991 in Spanish Town, Jamaica. She has 13 siblings and one of them, Kentardo nicknamed her ‘Bunny’ because of her love of eating carrots. Shaw started playing football and at 14 years old, she was called up to the U15s Jamaica’s national football team.
The footballer faced many hardships as girls weren’t allowed to play football in Jamaica. However, Shaw received a scholarship to join the University of Tennessee to play and study in the United States.
She played for the team for one year and scored 27 goals in 35 appearances. Before that, Shaw played for Eastern Florida State College Titans, made 21 appearances and scored 24 goals.

Khadija Shaw’s Senior Career
After her successful stint at the college level, Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) side Florida Krush. She played here for a year and then French side Bordeaux signed her in 2019.
Shaw made her debut against FC Fleury 91 and scored a brace. In her first season, the forward scored 10 goals in 15 games. In the following season, Shaw put out a scintillating performance and scored 22 goals and seven assists. Shaw completed the season as the top scorer.
Manchester City came in for her in 2021. Khadija Shaw joined the Citizens and hit the ground running. In her first season, she scored 16 goals and finished as the second-highest scorer. In the 2022/23 season, she netted 26 goals, surpassed English player Nikita Parris (22 goals), and became the club’s highest goal scorer in a single season.

International Football
Jamaica made its debut at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019 in France. Khadija Shaw was one of the players who represented the country in the tournament. She made her international debut in 2015 and scored a brace.
In 2023, Shaw returned to the FIFA Women’s World Cup with Jamaica. They surpassed people’s expectations after reaching the round of 16. The team crowdfunded to get money to travel to Australia & New Zealand after their federation declared they didn’t have enough funds to support them.
So far, Khadija Shaw has made 41 appearances and scored 55 goals for her country.
