Most people go to the Caribbean to unwind. The region is known for its relaxed feel, beaches and water bodies. Surfing and water skiing are some of the most popular sporting activities associated with the Caribbean. However, so many more sports take place in the region.

Football

Football is one of the most popular sports in the Caribbean. It has a good record in international football. Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti have qualified for the FIFA World Cup. 

Additionally, some of the biggest players at the top level have come from the Caribbean. The legendary Manchester United players Dwight York, Joyclyn Angloma and Russell Lapaty.

Rugby

The influence of British presence in the Caribbean was spread through sport. Rugby is widely played in the region. Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and St. Lucia are some places where rugby thrives. These countries have national teams but haven’t really challenged for major tournaments at the international level.

Cricket

Cricket has a big draw in the Caribbean. They are one of the best in the world and have produced some of the best cricketers in the game. Some include Evin Lewis, Chris Gayle, Charlie Griffith, Ian Bishop, and Desmond Haynes.  All three forms of cricket are played here – the T20 International, Test matches and One Day International (ODI). 

Some titles West Indies have won include the World Cup in 1975 and 1979, the T20 World Cup twice (2012, 2016) and the Champions Trophy (2004).

Baseball

Another sport that’s popular in the Caribbean is baseball. The sport is widely played in the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto Rico. The Dominican is famed for its love for the sport. 

The game arrived in the country in the 19th Century, with the first game reportedly played in 1886. Professional baseball came in the 1920s and 1930s. Since then, they’ve established themselves in the world. In 2023, Dominica ranks 10th in the world. In 2013, they won the World Baseball Classic undefeated. 

The region has its own league, the Caribbean League Series.

The Caribbean is a great place to go to not only for vacations but also to enjoy sports. Other sports you can try include golf and sailing. You can find some of the equipment for these different sports on Amazon.
