The oldest baseball stadiums have been around since the early days and have stood the test of time. Some are still in use and provide a close feel to baseball roots as some of the most historic moments in the game took place in these facilities.

Fenway Park

Fenway Park, located in Boston, Massachusets, is one of the oldest baseball stadiums. The Boston Red Sox have been the stadium’s home team since it was opened in 1912. It can hold over 37,000 fans and its highest attendance, 47,627, was recorded in 1935. 

To keep the facility in good shape, renovations have been done three times with the ground being expanded five times. The Boston Braves is the other Major League Baseball (MLB) team to have used Fenway Park as its home ground. 

Wrigley Field

When it was opened in 1914, Wrigley Field was called Weegham Park. It changed its name to Wrigley after the owner of the gum manufacturing company, six years after he bought the Chicago Cubs in 1921. The first team game played in the facility was 1916 and won the game against the Cincinnati Reds. The sitting capacity of the venue is 41, 649 with a record of 47,171.

Dodger Stadium

The Dodger Stadium joins our list of the oldest baseball stadiums. It was opened in 1962 and has been the home of the Los Angeles Dodgers since. This facility is the largest baseball stadium in the world with a capacity of 56,000. 

Its highest attendance was in 2009 when 57,099 fans watched the Dodger’s Home opener. The facility has been renovated a few times to modernize it and maintain high standards. Some of the notable events that have taken place at the Dodger Stadium include the World Series and the Post Season Games.

Angel Stadium

The Angel Stadium was opened in 1966, making it one of the oldest baseball stadiums and the home of the Los Angeles Angels. Its initial capacity was 43,250 but it has been expanded to accommodate 45, 517 people, with a record attendance of 64, 406. 

Renovations took place at the Angel Stadium in 1980 and 1997-1998. Some of the notable events that have taken place in the stadium include the American League Division Series and the 2002 World Series.

Oakland Coliseum

Operations at the Oakland Coliseum started in 1966 when the facility opened. It went by the name the Network Associates, McAfee Coliseum, Overstock.com and the Ring Central before it got its current name the Oakland Coliseum. 

The Oakland Athletics have been its occupant since 1968. This stadium was built for football so it has the largest foul territory for a baseball stadium.’

Kauffman Stadium

By the time of its opening, the stadium was named the Royals Stadium but this changed in 1993, in honor of the Royals’ founder Erwing Kauffman. It started with a capacity of 40,625 but over the years, it’s been scaled down to 37,903. 

The Kansas City Royals use this as their home ground. The grounds underwent significant renovations between 2007 and 2009 to modernize it and ensure it kept up with the other facilities in the league.

These stadiums help to retain some of the game’s oldest traditions and history. It’s a joy that current and future generations of players, fans and administrators in the game get a feel of what it’s like to watch and play on these grounds. We’d love to hear your experiences.
