French footballer Kylian Mbappe isn’t only one of the best players in the world but has also been named the fastest. This has led to comparisons with the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt. Is his 36km per hour enough to stop the Jamaican at his prime? Let’s examine the pace at which Usain Bolt and Mbappe ran.

Kylian Mbappe’s Speed

Kylian Mbappe hit a top speed of 23.6 mph or 38 km/h when he was a 20-year-old player at Paris Saint Germain (PSG). This happened when they played against Monaco in 2019 in the French League.

He made a 50-meter sprint to get to the end of a pass and, in Mbappe style, scored a goal. This made him the fastest player in the league in the 2018/19 season.

At the time, Mbappe’s speed surpassed Usain Bolt’s average of 23.35 miles/hr or 37.58 km/hr when he made the 100m world record in 2009.

When Mbappe is on the ball, he doesn’t lose much speed. He hit a top speed of 22.31 mph or 36.08 km/h. This is only 1.19 mph or 1.92 km/h slower than when he’s running without the ball.

Usain Bolt’s Speed

Bolt retired in 2017 but he’s still the fastest sprinter in the world. No one’s come close to breaking his 2009 100m record of 9.58 seconds and while scientists believe it can be broken, it’ll take a long time.

That said, with Mbappe having topped Bolt’s average in that race, many are wondering whether he’s actually faster.

Is Mbappe Faster Than Bolt?

The simple answer is no because both covered different distances. Mbappe’s speed is measured over a 50m sprint, while Bolt’s is over a 100m sprint. This means that Bolt’s average is higher than Mbappe’s.

In terms of Usain Bolt vs Kylian Mbappe’s top speed, the Jamaican wins this. His ground speed during the race was 37.58km/h and hit a top speed of 44.72km/h. In comparison to the French footballer, he’s 4.18 mph or 6.72 km/h faster.

A YouTube simulation compared the speeds between Usain Bolt vs Kylian Mbappe in a 100m sprint. Mbappe crossed the finish line in 10.9 seconds, 1.32 seconds behind Bolt. For a footballer, that’s fast, considering he’s not primarily training to sprint.

Even though Bolt is faster, it’s a compliment for Mbappe to be put on the same playing field as the world’s fastest man.
