Joshua Buatsi is one of the boxers whose name rings around the boxing world. Although he hasn’t reached the level of his British compatriot Anthony Joshua, he’s making a name for himself. Joshua Buatsi’s Early Life & Career

Joshua Buatsi was born in Accra, Ghana before his family moved to the United Kingdom. He grew up in a violent neighborhood but he chose a different path. He began going to the gym, training and competing which he says grounded him. 

His career started at the South Norwood and Victory Club. He first signed with Matchroom Boxing owned by the family of one of the most iconic boxing coaches, Eddie Hearn. He competed in promotions fight camp against Ricards Bolotniks and Craig Richards, and won both matches. 

While at the lower level, he qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics after beating Oleksandr Khyzhniak and Peter Müllenberg. He reached the quarter-final round at the Olympics.

Professional Career

The boxer debuted in 2017 at O2 Arena and won his first professional fight against Carlos Mena. He then won matches against:

  • Baptiste Castegnaro be knocked out in the fifth round
  • Saidou Sall in six rounds
  • Jordan Joseph in the second round
  • Liam Conroy via a technical knockout
  • Bartlomiej Grafka in six rounds
  • Stephane Cuevas by a knockout

The Ghanaian-British boxer debuted in the United States with a victory over seasoned Mexican boxer Marco Antonio Periban. He then faced Ryan Ford twice and on both occasions won.

In 2021, Buatsi’s winning streak continued, defeating Daniel Dos Santos and then rained blows on his next opponent Ričards Bolotņiks. From his victories, you can tell that Buatsi has a very good record. In 18 fights, he’s won all and is yet to lose a match.

Beyond Boxing

Apart from his boxing life, Buatsi is open about his Christian faith, saying it’s helped him go through life. He also recognizes the dangers of boxing and praying helps him to be confident in every match and when he’s safe, he remains grateful. 

Additionally, the boxer runs the Joshua Buatsi Foundation based in Ghana. He uses it to create a safe space for boxers to train and offer support to underprivileged orphans and children.

Joshua Buatsi is creating his mark in boxing not just by the types of results he gets but with the way he also carries himself. Should he continue amassing a winning record, it’s only a matter of time before he’s ranked alongside great names like Anthony Joshua.
