The 2024 Olympics in Paris will have 329 events, four of which are still new in the Olympic circuit. The Olympics allows new disciplines to feature but they have to meet stipulated requirements for them to be accepted. For example, the sport has to be largely practised in at least 75 countries on four continents by both genders.

Break dancing is popular in music, originating from New York in the 1960s and 1970s, where the hip-hop culture dominated.

DJ Kool Herc noticed young people making sporadic moves during certain moments in the song and decided to prolong the break to give them a chance to show off their moves. Hence the name ‘breaking’ from the fact that a piece of music would have a break for them to dance.

Break dancing was popularized through various media outlets by having the dancers featured in popular shows. Many years later, break dancing is an official Olympic sport and will for the first time be done in Paris.

There are 32 qualified breakers, 16 boys and girls each. They’ll compete at the Place de la Concorde.

Skateboarding is still a new Olympic sport introduced at the Tokyo 2020 Games. The sport isn’t new as many do it casually, alongside skating and even surfing.

It originated from surfing because some surfers wanted to transfer the same feeling they got in the water to the land. Its popularity grew from giving people a sense of belonging.

This is another relatively new Olympic sport having debuted in 2020 in Tokyo. Surfing is a recognizable sport and many have taken part in it in various forms.

During the Paris Games, 24 surfers will look to surmount the Teahupo’o Rollers, which is said to have one of the most iconic waves, reaching heights of 7 meters.

The most feared wave is at the Tahiti, French Polynesia, so surfers must be fast, fierce, poised and have good board-handling skills to pull out a successful manoeuvre.

Sport Climbing

Sport climbing is yet another new inclusion, having started in 2020. The event will take place at the Parc sportif et scolaire du Bourget.

Climbers will have to surmount a 15-meter wall within a set amount of time – 6 seconds- and then a 4.5-meter wall.

The sport is popular with an estimated reach of over 25 million people and is practised in over 150 countries.

These are the new Olympic sports you should be excited about. They aren’t the obvious disciplines many people would be talking about and waiting to watch but it’s a nice addition to your Olympics experience.
