The Englishman was lined up to join the senior team in 2017, but disagreements over his playing time led him to look for a move away.

Jadon Sancho signed for German club Borussia Dortmund for a fee of about $9 million. He was instantly integrated into the first team and hit the ground running.

On his first match against Eintracht Frankfurt, Jadon Sancho hit the woodwork, a clear indication of his intentions. In subsequent matches, the winger bagged a number of goals and scooped the Player of the Month award in October 2018.

He also became the first English player to play for Dortmund and the youngest to net nine goals in a Bundesliga season.

In his first season, Jadon Sancho played a total of 25 goals. His second season was even more successful. Sancho helped Dortmund win the German Super Cup over arch-rivals Bayern Munich. His performances saw him nominated for the Golden Boy, Trophy Awards and named the Bundesliga Player of the Month.

At the end of the 2021 season, Jadon Sancho scored a brace and helped Dortmund win the DFB Pokal against RB Leipzig.

In his four seasons in Germany, Sancho scored 50 goals and made 64 assists in over 100 appearances.

Move to Manchester United

Back home, football fans were excited about the prospect of Jadon Sancho joining the Premier League. In 2021, Sancho signed a five-year worth $89 million with the Red Devils.

Upon signing, Sancho told Manchester United website that “it was a dream come true.” He also thanked Borussia Dortmund for giving him an opportunity to play first-team football and was excited about playing in the Premier League

In August 2021, Sancho made his debut and has received a significant playing time. In his first two seasons, he played a total of 91 games in all competitions, 82 of those in the Premier League. During the 2023/24 campaign, Jadon Sancho has only played 76 minutes of football.

Slump in Performance

Jadon Sancho’s fluctuating performances became a subject of interest. In 2022, he was on a separate training program with a Dutch club OJC Rosmalen. He was then put on an individual training program at United before he was reintegrated back into the team. He returned back to form but that didn’t last long.

On his assessment, Erik Ten Hag stated that “it’s all in his hands” meaning that the player has to raise his efforts as he has the potential to be a key player for United. Toward the end of the 2022/2023 season, Jadon Sancho was less involved. In the games that he played, he made minimal contributions.

Fall Out with Erik Ten Hag

It’s clear that Manchester United and Erik Ten Hag zoomed in on Jadon Sancho and have been working to get him on track. Amidst Ten Hag’s praise and warning during his press conferences, everything appeared to be under control.

Everything blew up when the Dutch manager called Sancho’s commitment in training. He said that he didn’t perform to the level expected.

The Englishman fired back in a now-deleted Instagram post and alleged that he’s been scapegoated several times. He also disputed his manager’s assessment and maintained that he was performing to the levels expected.

The player has since deleted his Instagram post and been exiled from using first-team facilities at Carrington, awaiting disciplinary action.

Transfer Rumors

Reports indicate that the relationship between Erik Ten Hag and Jadon Sancho is irreparable. As a result, the winger is keen on leaving Old Trafford.

Saudi Arabian clubs are interested in him, but Sancho isn’t interested as he still wants to play European football. His former club, Borussia Dortmund and Nottingham Forest, are possible destinations.

Jadon Sancho is still young and can turn the situation around. Whether he does that at Manchester United or elsewhere, remains to be seen.
