Archie Griffin thought his record of winning the Heisman Trophy twice would be broken by now. However, that’s not been the case despite the presence of college players who seem to have the ability to match or go past his record. Griffin had a nine-year career in which he received several recognitions.

He continues to be involved in the game after retirement and has also joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) as an owner. This is a review of the career of Archie Griffin.

Archie Griffin’s Early Career

Griffin comes from a football family. His father was an All-State High School player and his brothers played in college and the National Football League (NFL). His records were impeccable. 

He made 1, 787 yards, 170 points and 11 games and helped his school win the Colombus City League Championship. For his outstanding performance, the school inducted him into the Hall of Fame and renamed its field to the Archie Griffin Field.

College Career

Griffin played for Ohio State University. His inclusion into the first team as a freshman didn’t go well with the sophomore players but the coach stood firm on his decision. Griffin proved himself.

On his first game, he broke a 27-year record, making 239 yards. He then bettered his record in his sophomore year, making 246 yards. In the subsequent years, he became a significant player on the side, making 867 yards, the most of any player on the team. 

He scored over 4,000 yards in three years, the most of any player. He left with an NCAA record of over 5,500 yards with 924 carriers. His performance contributed to Ohio State’s record of 40-5-1 and played in the Rose Bowl four times.

Professional Career

In 1976, the Cincinnati Bengals drafted Archie Griffin as a first-round 24th pick. He spent seven years with the team. He couldn’t hit the height in college, recording only over 2800 yards and 7 touchdowns. In 1982, Griffin played in the Super Bowl but the Bengals lost. After that season, he joined the Jacksonville Bulls and played until 1985.

Life after Football

Archie Griffin is the spokesman of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award Program. Previously, he was involved with the Ohio State University Alumni Association. He’s also a businessman, having been part of the Motor Insurance board. He’s invested in baseball with Magic Johnson in the Mandalay Baseball Properties LLC before it was sold in 2014.

Honors and Recognition

For his college achievements, Griffin was inducted into the College Hall of Fame in 1986. In 1981, Ohio State entered him into the Varsity Hall of Fame and afterwards, Griffin also made it into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame and the International Sports Hall of Fame.

Archie Griffin continues to be honored for his contributions to football. His professional career in the NFL might not have been as glamorous as his college career but that doesn’t interfere with his legacy.
