11 Best Black Female Stand-Up Comedians on Netflix

Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes is an American black female stand-up comedian, actress, writer, and producer. In 1999, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her work as a writer on The Chris Rock Show. In 2004, Entertainment Weekly named Sykes one of America’s 25 funniest people.

As a result of her smart-witted stand-up, her career has taken her into many different fields. Previously, she appeared on Comedy Central’s “Wanda Does It,” where she tried various non-showbiz jobs.

In her comedy series “Not Normal,” Wanda Sykes scores many direct hits. Throughout the show’s first section, material about Trump dominates the discussion of the state of the country under Trump’s presidency. “It’s not normal,” she says.

The comedy icon also discusses parenting with her French wife, public bathrooms, and why she’s tired of going low when others go high in “I’m an Entertainer.”

Nicole Byer

Among her many talents, Nicole Byer, is an actress, writer, author, podcaster, and comedian. She is known as the host of the Netflix comedic reality bake-off series Nailed It! And it’s from this that she received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

Byer gained recognition for her work in the commentary series Girl Code.

Her half-hour performance as a part of the Comedians of the World series is equally real and raunchy. For the adults who can handle her dropping hilarious truth bombs, her masterful blending of jokes and stories about body image, sex, and black culture is not to be missed.

Nicole Byer has a long list of successful podcasts and appearances on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Unicorn, the Rugrats reboot, and numerous other voice and live credits. She touches on politics in her new special without becoming overwhelmed by it; she makes poignant observations and offers advice occasionally without ever coming across as preachy.

London Hughes

London Dionne Micha Stacey Stephanie Estina Knibbs-Hughes is a British comedian, television writer, and presenter. 2010 saw her comedy pilot for the BBC, Laughter Shock, in which she wrote and acted.

London was the main attraction in her most recent special, producing charisma that doesn’t even begin to capture her alluring and electrifying presence.

She exudes an arrogance akin to Meg Stalter in the opening skit before the special begins, and she maintains that energy throughout the special as she calls herself “Comedy Beyonce” and “The Female Richard Pryor.”

You’ll agree with me that she’s one of those exceptional individuals who appears to have always had a microphone in hand.

Tiffany Haddish

Tiffany Sara Cornilia Haddish is an American stand-up comedian and actress. Although she’s a household name, her breakthrough came with a leading role in the comedy film Girls Trip, which earned her several accolades and was included on The New Yorker’s list of the best film performances of the 21st century.

Not only is her 2017 comedy special “She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood” a strong hour of comedy, but it also helped her land a deal with Netflix that includes her 2019 special Black Mitzvah and the series They Ready!, which celebrates six diverse female voices.

Janelle James

Janelle James is an American comedian, actress, and writer. She won a Black Reel Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and an NAACP Image Award for her performance as Ava Coleman in the television series Abbott Elementary, for which she is best remembered.

Additionally, she received numerous nods for awards, including the Critics’ Choice Award, Independent Spirit Award, Golden Globe Award, and Primetime Emmy Award.

While residing in Champaign, Illinois, in 2009, James started her career at an open mic. She called her brand of humor “just talking shit.” Her stand-up routine covers a variety of subjects, including dating, Trump, motherhood, and being a woman over 35.

She gave a genuine performance that highlighted her character on the 2018 Netflix comedy series The Comedy Lineup.

She currently contributes to Apple TV+’s Central Park and Showtime’s Black Monday, but what really stands out in this collection is her energizing perspective, particularly on issues relating to black culture, romantic relationships, and parenting.

Gina Yashere

Regina Obedapo “Gina” Iyashere is a British comedian, actress, and writer who has made numerous appearances on British and American television. She contributed to the creation of the sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola, in which she plays a supporting role.

Her special on  “The Apprentice Guy” is a reminder of what a joke she already was, way back in 2013, when this special was released.

Naomi Ekperigin

Naomi Ekperigin is an American comedian, actress, producer, and writer. In addition to acting in the television productions Corporate, Search Party, Central Park, and Mythic Quest, she has written for the programs Great News and Broad City.

Naomi Ekperigin quickly lightens the mood on The Standups’ rather uneven third season with her frantic energy and propensity for yelling to punctuate jokes. She is well known for her appearances on the podcast 2 Dope Queens in addition to her familiarity with Broad City.

A delightful combination is created by Ekperigen’s contagious love of Nancy Meyers movies and his jaded view of Los Angeles. Her unique, turned-up-to-11 cadence makes the entire thirty minutes feel like a tonic for the spirit.

Sommore

Sommore has been one of the most consistent voices in comedy for years now, and if you aren’t already familiar with her, you should start with 2015’s The Reign Continues and also watch 2013’s Chandelier Status, available now on Netflix.

Leslie Jones

Annette “Leslie” Jones is an American stand-up comedian, actress, writer, singer, and game show host. Jones was a cast member and writer for the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 2014 to 2019.

She’s the host of the ABC game show Supermarket Sweep. Leslie Jones, in contrast to most comedians on Netflix, dives headfirst into crowd interaction from the get-go, eschewing the sterility of some specials.

At one point, she leads a Tevin Campbell singalong, while at others, she yells into audience members’ faces about their perceived faults. The latter circumstance leads to some of the funniest moments of the entire special, with Jones’ amusing jokes triumphing over any initial awkwardness.

Michelle Wolf

Michelle Wolf is an American comedian, writer, producer, and television host. She worked as a writer and contributor for both The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Late Night with Seth Meyers. She spoke as the featured performer at the 2018 White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Michelle Wolf launches straight into an otter rape bit in her Netflix special Joke Show; there are no introductions or opening jokes to acclimate the audience.

Although it may seem strange, Wolf’s skillful delivery makes even her most grating jokes funny. Part of why this works is her quick connection with the audience.

Ms. Pat

Ms. Pat is the stage name of Patricia Williams, an American actress and stand-up comedian best known for her work on The Ms. Pat Show and as the host of the podcast The Patdown with Ms. Pat.

To put it mildly, Ms. Pat’s life was difficult. She was sexually assaulted as a teenager. When she was thirty, her caseworker encouraged her to try making fun of her experiences on stage.

Her comedy special shines when she makes fun of herself or others in positions of power beyond her, keeping with her enduring comedy thesis: “I don’t dwell on shit I don’t have control over.”

These black female comedians are worth your view on Netflix and other TV shows you love. Besides, you can check them out on their social media platforms for their stand-up comedy moments.
