Vida Blue single handedly won the World Series for the Oakland Athletics thrice, between 1972 and 1974. In 1971, he was named the starting pitcher in the All-Star Game, league opener and playoff opener, a rare feat for a black baseball pitcher. In that season, he was named the American League CY Young Award winner. After his success in Oakland, he also played for the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals.
