The Football Association Challenge Cup, commonly known as the FA Cup is the oldest football competition and one of England’s most cherished football events. It’s played during the football season and the final is always held in May at Wembley Stadium. Numerous African players have played in the competition and won. Lauren

Lauren was a member of the Arsenal Invincible team. The Cameroonian defender was one of the best in his position. He won three FA Cup trophies with the Gunners in 2001–02, 2002–03 and 2004–05. The player wasn’t the most talked about in the squad, featuring high-profile players like Thiery Henry. Nonetheless, his presence was significant.

John Obi Mikel

John Obi-Mikel joins our FA Cup winners list. He was one of the most enjoyable midfielders to watch. In 2016, he moved to Chelsea from Norwegian club Lyn. Here’s where he established himself as a world-class footballer, winning multiple titles including four FA Cup trophies in 2006–07, 2008–09, 2009–10 and 2011–12. 

By the time his spell at Chelsea ended in 2017, Mikel was a Premier League, Champions League and Europa League winner. He moved to China and later played for Middlesbrough and Stoke City in the EPL, but never hit the heights he did at Chelsea.

Kolo Toure

Kolo Toure was another African gem in Europe. Playing for major clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, he won numerous titles but only won the FA Cup at Arsenal. This happened during the 2002/03 and 2004/05 seasons.

Michael Essien

Michael Essien was a four-time FA Cup winner with Chelsea. He achieved this during the 2006–07, 2008–09, 2009–10 and 2011–12. 

This was the most successful time in his career as he established himself as a no-nonsense midfielder and one of the best African players

He was part of the Jose Mourinho era and also clinched several titles including the Premier League, Champions League and FA Community Shield.

Nwankwo Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu not only won the FA Cup but scored crucial goals for Arsenal and Portsmouth. He won three cup finals, two with the Gunners and one with Portsmouth. Alongside that, Kanu won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

Riyad Mahrez

The Algerian international is one of the African FA Cup winners. He won the trophy twice, in 2018/19 & 2022/23 at Manchester City. He played in City’s 6-0 demolition of Watford to add another trophy to his collection. In 2023, they beat rivals Manchester United 1-0 to clinch the treble. He also won the Premier League and the Champions League titles.

Yaya Toure

Yaya Toure is one of Africa’s best footballers. He dominated Manchester City’s midfield, helping them win games. He joined the club in 2010 from Barcelona and coincidentally left after Pep Guardiola’s arrival. That said, he won many titles including one FA Cup and three Premier League titles.

These African FA Cup Winners are some of the best footballers from the continent. They’ve played for some of the biggest clubs and won major titles.
