France’s most successful Club Olympique Lyon is also the most decorated team in women’s football in Europe. They’ve won the UEFA Women’s Champions League eight times and also made the most final appearances at 10. Lyon won their first title in 2010/11 against former winners Potsdam and won their second the following year.

Between 2015 and 2019, Lyon had an unprecedented run, winning five consecutive titles. Their run was halted in 2020/21 after French rivals Paris Sanit-Germain beat them in the quarter-finals. They regained their title in 2021/22, which was their last title to date. This year, Lyon is playing for a place in the final against PSG.

Eintracht Frankfurt – 4

Before Lyon came along, German club Frankfurt was a strong side in Europe. Three out of four of their titles came during the UEFA Women’s Cup era. They were the first winners of the first competition in 2001/02. Frankfurt’s last title came in 2014/15 and they aren’t the dominant side they once were. Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg now dominate the German women’s football club.

German club VfL Wolfsburg is a big force in the Frauen Bundesliga, but has had a tough time dominating Europe. They’ve won two titles in 2012/13 and 2013/14. Since then, they’ve been to four finals and lost three to Lyon and one to Barcelona.

Their latest setback came after they took a 2-0 lead through Alexandra Popp’s header and Ewa Pajor only to lose 3-2 in the finals. Patricia Guijarro scored two quick goals in the second half to equalize and then Fridolina Rolfö scored the winner.

MSV Duisburg – 1

The glory days of Duisburg Women are long gone, domestically and continentally. The German club lifted the trophy in 2008/09, beating Zvezda-2005 and were the last winners of the UEFA Women’s Cup. Unfortunately, the club’s mismanagement led to its downfall and they don’t feature in the tournament as often. The last time they did was in the 2010/11 semi-finals

The UEFA Women’s Champions League is among the best competitions in football. Today, it draws crowds, especially, when big teams like Barcelona, Lyon and Chelsea play. Its modernization has contributed to its success and the fact that it has become more competitive than ever before adds to its excitement. Is there a team that can outdo record holders Lyon?
