The UEFA Women’s Champions League is a flagship European competition for European clubs. The tournament has gone through several changes in response to the growth of women’s football. It was first played as the UEFA Women’s Cup after UEFA approved the creation of the competition.
In 2009/10, it was rebranded into its current name. It’s also gone through format changes, and currently, matches the men’s equivalent, from the group stage to the finals. That said, a few clubs have been crowned European champions. Here’s a list of UEFA Women’s Champions League winners.

Lyon – 8
France’s most successful Club Olympique Lyon is also the most decorated team in women’s football in Europe. They’ve won the UEFA Women’s Champions League eight times and also made the most final appearances at 10. Lyon won their first title in 2010/11 against former winners Potsdam and won their second the following year.
Between 2015 and 2019, Lyon had an unprecedented run, winning five consecutive titles. Their run was halted in 2020/21 after French rivals Paris Sanit-Germain beat them in the quarter-finals. They regained their title in 2021/22, which was their last title to date. This year, Lyon is playing for a place in the final against PSG.

Eintracht Frankfurt – 4
Before Lyon came along, German club Frankfurt was a strong side in Europe. Three out of four of their titles came during the UEFA Women’s Cup era. They were the first winners of the first competition in 2001/02. Frankfurt’s last title came in 2014/15 and they aren’t the dominant side they once were. Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg now dominate the German women’s football club.

VFL Wolfsburg – 2

German club VfL Wolfsburg is a big force in the Frauen Bundesliga, but has had a tough time dominating Europe. They’ve won two titles in 2012/13 and 2013/14. Since then, they’ve been to four finals and lost three to Lyon and one to Barcelona.
Their latest setback came after they took a 2-0 lead through Alexandra Popp’s header and Ewa Pajor only to lose 3-2 in the finals. Patricia Guijarro scored two quick goals in the second half to equalize and then Fridolina Rolfö scored the winner.

Turbine Potsdam – 2
Turbine Potsdam was once one of the biggest women’s football clubs. Its first title came in 2004/05 and its second in 2009/10. The club is an independent team, and has struggled to keep up with the evolution of the game. They were relegated to a lower division in Germany in 2023 for the first time. The last time they progressed deep into the tournament was in 2013/14.

Umea IK – 2
Swedish club Umea was once a powerhouse in European football. During that period, they won two UEFA Women’s Champions League titles in its previous era in 2002/03 and 2003/04. Those days are long gone as the club last featured in the competition in the 2010/11 qualifying round. Domestically, they’ve also struggled to maintain their dominance and fallen off.

Barcelona Femeni – 2

Spanish giants Barcelona are the reigning champions of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. The Catalans seek to retain the title and will play English club Chelsea in the semi-finals for a place in the finals. Barça has been to four finals between 2019 and 2023, winning two titles. Its parent club has invested heavily in women’s football and it’s paying off. Can the Blaugrana win a second consecutive title?

Arsenal – 1
Arsenal Women is the only English club to win the Champions League. They achieved this feat in the 2006/07 season, when they also dominated English football. However, in the new era, they’ve been in the semi-finals and quarter-finals four times.
MSV Duisburg – 1
The glory days of Duisburg Women are long gone, domestically and continentally. The German club lifted the trophy in 2008/09, beating Zvezda-2005 and were the last winners of the UEFA Women’s Cup. Unfortunately, the club’s mismanagement led to its downfall and they don’t feature in the tournament as often. The last time they did was in the 2010/11 semi-finals.
The UEFA Women’s Champions League is among the best competitions in football. Today, it draws crowds, especially, when big teams like Barcelona, Lyon and Chelsea play.
