Barack and Michelle Obama
You can’t talk about black power couples without mentioning Barack and Michelle Obama. They took center stage in one of America’s defining historical moments, being the first black couple to occupy the White House.
Barack and Michelle met at a Chicago law firm in 1989. The former president was an associate while Michelle was tasked with mentoring him. Nonetheless, Barack asked her out on a date, which ended with an engagement in 1991 and they married in 1992.
In 1998, Barack and Michelle welcomed their first child, Malia and in 2001, Sasha was born. The two celebrated their 31st anniversary in 2023.

Courtney B. Vance and Angela Bassett
Hollywood actors Angela Basset and Courtney Vance join the black power couples list. They have been married for 26 years. The two met in 1980 at Yale School of Drama but were never involved with one another.
The two went their separate ways and later met in Los Angeles. In 1994, the duo began dating and tied the knot three years later. In 2006, the couple welcomed their two kids, Bronwyn Golden Vance and Slater Josiah Vance, via a surrogate.

Julius Tennon and Viola Davis
Viola Davis is one of the most celebrated actresses in Hollywood. Away from her craft, she’s also a befitting icon for black love. Her marriage to Julius Tennon is now in its 20th year.
The two met in 1999 and Davis in interviews, said, Tenon was what she was looking for. Despite the spotlight that Davis receives, their relationship remains private, and only share a few things on social media.
In 2011, the pair adopted a baby girl named Genesis and are parents to two of Tennon’s children from his previous relationships.

Patrice and Precious Motsepe
For a country that still reels from the impact of apartheid, it’s a breath of fresh air to have a black couple at the highest echelons of society. Patrice and his wife are the wealthiest black couple in South Africa and use their platforms for the greater good.
The Motsepes said they’d give a significant part of their wealth to philanthropy. The two met at the University of Witwatersrand and tied the knot in 1989. They have three children: Thlopie, Kgosi, and Kabelo.

Strive and Tsitsi Masiyiwa
Strive Masiyiwa is believed to be Zimbabwe’s richest man. He’s married to Tsitsi, and they celebrated their 33rd anniversary in 2023. The couple keeps their affairs private and is known more for their philanthropic work. His foundation, Higher Life Foundation, impacts the continent in key sectors: education, health and community programs.
Shelly-Anne Fraser and Jason Pryce
Shelly-Anne is one of Jamaica’s most decorated sprinter. She met her husband, Jason Pryce, in 2007 during a training session at the University of Technology in Kingston. The couple got married in 2011 at The Tryall Club in Hanover. In 2017, they welcomed their first child, Zyon. The pair are one of the black power couples in the Caribbean.

Wahu and Nameless

Wahu and Nameless are two of Kenya’s most iconic couples, which is why they deserve a spot in this black power couples list. They met at the University of Nairobi where they both studied.
The pair’s courtship lasted for seven years before Nameless popped the question. They officiated their union in 2005 in Lake Naivasha. The couple shares three children and have a series that follows their relationship titled ‘This Love.’
