The Dominican Republic has a track star. In 2022, Marileidy Paulino made history at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, winning the gold medal in the women’s 400m. She’s an athlete competitors in the same distance will now look at as the one to beat. In this post, we detail her journey.

The sprinter grew up in a deprived home in Nizao Municipality, Peravia Province. A single mother raised her and has five siblings. The conditions around her motivated her to want to do something for her community.

Marileigy Paulino’s involvement in sports started in school. She joined the volleyball team and almost became the Dominican Republican national team. However, fate had other plans for her. She was scouted by her country’s athletic association and switched to athletics.

Professional Career

Marileidy Paulino’s first competition was the 2015 Dominican Republic Youth Games, where she bagged her first medal in the 100m. 

The following year, Marileidy was part of the 4 by 400m relay team in the same Youth Games. They won three events – Throw Festival, Jump, and Relay.

Another big win for her came in the Athletics National Championship. She won the 100m in a time of 11.96. This underlined her credentials as one of the country’s best talents. Her federation shows immense support to her. 

They included her in the team to participate in the North American, Central American, and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Under-23 Championships. She also participated in the Dominican Republic Military Games.

On the World Stage

Marileidy collected numerous medals, including a bronze medal at:

  • The Central American Caribbean Games
  • A silver in the military games in Wuhan, 2019 
  • A bronze medal in the 4 by 400m at the 2021 World Relay Championships.

2022 was a big year. Marileidy continued her winning streak. She clinched medals at major events. At the Ibero-American Championships, she was a gold medalist in the 400m and the 4 by 400m relays. At the Diamond League and the World Championships in Eugene, she clinched the gold medal in the 400m and a silver in the 4 by 400m. 

In 2023, the Dominican Republican sprinter arrived in Hungary, Budapest, having medalled in other events. By the time she lined up for the 400m, Marileidy was ready for the competition. She crossed the finish line in a time of 48.76 and set a national record. This made her the first woman from the Dominican Republic to win a solo world title.

It’s a dream she’s been working on for a while now, and she’s glad it’s come to pass. 

Marileidy Paulino deserves everything she’s won so far. This is not the last time we’ll hear about her. The Dominica Republican track star will want to achieve more for herself and her country.
