2023 Netball World Cup
The 16th edition of the Netball World Cup was for the first time hosted in Cape Town, South Africa. 16 teams participated in the event that ran from 20 July to 6 August. The matches took place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Four African nations played at the tournament: Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe, but none of them came close to winning. Australia have crowned the eventual champions.

2010 FIFA World Cup
South Africa is the first and only country in Africa to host the FIFA World Cup. In 2010, the world descended into the Rainbow Nation to witness a colourful event dotted with vuvuzelas.
Siphiwe Tshabalala gave South Africa one of its highlight moments when he scored their opening goal against Mexico. However, Bafana was eliminated in the group stage.

2003 Cricket World Cup
This is another global sports event hosted in South Africa. Although it was co-hosted by two other nations, Zimbabwe and Kenya, a large part of the action took place in South Africa.
This was the first time the Cricket World Cup took place in Africa. It featured 54 matches and was won by Australia. Some of the venues used include Kingsmead in Durban, Diamond Oval in Kimberly and Buffalo Park in East London.

1996 Africa Cup of Nations
In 1996, African nations landed in South Africa for the continent’s greatest showpiece event. This happened four years after the country was reinstated to international football. They were banned due to the apartheid regime in 1961. Bafana Bafana won its only AFCON title, a moment that brought the nation together.

1995 Rugby World Cup
South Africa is one of the best nations in rugby. In 1995, they got the honor of hosting the biggest competition of the game. It came at a very critical time when the country just got back after being banned due to the apartheid regime.
The competition produced one of the country’s best sporting memories. The Springboks won the Rugby World Cup, and the late Nelson Mandela used their victory to unite the nation.

1993 & 1993 South African Grand Prix
South Africa had a place in the Formula One calendar in 1992 and 1993. The races were hosted at the Kyalami racetrack.
However, it’s been 30 years since and talks of a possible return made rounds after Lewis Hamilton stated he’d like to race in South Africa. That said, no confirmations have been made yet by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
