Timothy Weah is walking in the footsteps of his father. Just like him, he’s a professional footballer. Even though the young Weah is still developing, fans can’t help but compare him to his father, George Weah

Whether he’ll hit the heights his dad did, time will tell. In 2023, he moved to Europe and joined Italian side Juventus, a country his father also played in. This post examines the trajectory of his career.

Timothy Weah’s Early Career

Timothy’s career began in Florida, where his mother introduced him to the sport. His father tutored him when he could but was mostly in Liberia, where he’s highly involved in politics. With time, the teaching role shifted from his mum to his uncle, who placed Weah in his club, Rosedale Soccer Club

When his family relocated to New York, he joined BW Gottschee, the US Soccer Development Academy club, and played for the team for three seasons. At the age of 13, Weah transferred to the New York Red Bulls Academy

Professional Career

In 2013, he went for trials at Chelsea and, a year later, to Paris Saint Germain, where he played for the youth team.

The striker was one of the best players on the team and was given a contract by PSG, a club his father also played for. In 2018, Weah debuted for PSG and competed for the wing position against Angel Di Maria. However, he didn’t get enough playing time, so he chose to go on loan to Scotland.

At the end of the season, Weah left PSG for another French club Lille. He signed a five-year contract but missed most of the first season due to a hamstring injury. On his return, he got significant playing time and contributed eight goals in 107 appearances.

After four seasons in France, Timothy Weah was on the move again. He signed a five-year contract with Italian giants Juventus for a $13 million fee. So far, he’s played 7 matches and scored one goal.

How Weah Fits in Juventus

Timothy Weah is a winger. That said, he played as a full-back for Lille and is occupying a similar position at Juventus. The Italian club is known for using three defensive players and having the right and left full-backs join defensively to make a back five. It’s a relatively new position for the American but one that he relishes.

He revealed that he watches videos of acclaimed full-backs like Marcelo to learn the role. It’s a position he might thrive in because Weah’s key asset is creating dangerous situations for his team. With his pace, strength, and skill set, he can fend off one-on-one challenges and open up spaces for his teammates, who then can capitalize.

His goal-scoring record isn’t impeccable, having only scored eight in 107 games for his former club. Perhaps Juve isn’t depending on him for goals but for what we’ve just explained.

Expectations at Juventus

The American star joins Juve after a lackluster season in which they finished seventh. He’ll be expected to settle in quite fast and help them regain top spot. This can be too much pressure on the shoulders of a 23-year-old. The club is a step above his former, and even though he played for PSG, the Old Lady provides a bigger challenge.

International Career

The footballer chose to represent the United States in international competitions despite having four nationalities (Jamaica, America, France, and Liberia). Many people expected him to follow in his father’s footsteps and represent Liberia, but he had different ideas.

According to him, it wasn’t a tough decision to make. Born and raised in New York, where he also started his footballing journey, settled the matter in his mind. Nonetheless, Timothy Weah acknowledges and is proud of his roots.

Weah came through the US soccer system, having represented the U15, U17, U20 & U23 before he debuted for the senior team in 2018. During his youth playing days, he became the first American youth player to score a hat trick in U.S. colors. When he played for the senior team, he became the first player born in the 2000s to represent the country.

Currently, Timothy Weah has played 35 games for the U.S., scored five goals, and made four assists.
