According to reports, black Americans use alcohol less at 53% than white Americans, whose consumption is 68%. But this is a significant number that signifies the presence of a ready market for black-owned liquor brands.

1. Halo 7 Rum

Featured in Forbes, god sisters Ashley Jackson and JeNai Stanley launched Halo 7 Rum in Chicagoland. In honor of their heritage through the rum, the duo have focused on changing misunderstood concepts of the drink.  They use their brand to create better consumer experiences and cater to the interests of various spirit drinkers. 

Some of the flavors include:

  • Coconut
  • Vanilla

2. Anteel Tequila

Nayana Ferguson is the first black woman to co-own a Tequila company. She founded the black-owned liquor Anteel Tequila with her husband, Don Ferguson, in Metro Detroit, Michigan. After beating both breast and pancreatic cancer, Nayana sought healthier spirit options. 

Instead of sitting and waiting for someone to bring it to the market, the two produced their own with their first as the only coconut lime Blanco Tequila.

On August 27th, 2018, Ferguson released two tequila expressions of the Anteel Tequila, a Reposado Tequila, and a Coconut Lime Blanco Tequila. The third expression of Anteel Tequila was released on October 1st, 2019, a Blanco Tequila. Which is referred to by most customers as the “smoothest tequila on the planet.”

Since its release, Anteel Tequila has grown in terms of revenue and recognition. The tequila is now available in different selected stores, including:

  • Florida
  • California
  • Michigan
  • Texas
  • Colorado
  • Georgia
  • New York

3. Ten To One Rum

2019 Marc Farrell founded the Caribbean rum brand, Ten To One Rum, a black-owned liquor. The West Indies Federation, which consisted of 10 different countries, inspired the brand. Ciara, an American singer, joined Farrell as an investor in 2021. And in 2022, Ten To One Rum received investment from Diageo-backed Incubator Pronghorn.

The liquor product selections are a Caribbean Dark Rum, a Caribbean White Rum, and 17-Year Single Cask Reserve Rum. To celebrate Black History Month, Ten To One Rum Brand has partnered with Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, another black-owned liquor, for an edition of Caribbean rum.

4. Black Momma

Vanessa Braxton is the mind behind the black-owned liquor, Black Momma. She’s the owner of Black-led tea and beverage manufacturing company.  

The Black Momma Vodka is a high-level vodka. It’s distilled and filtered five times to ensure a smooth taste. And the distillation is via crushed diamond lava rocks blended with Cascade mountain spring water from Oregon.

5. Lobos 1707

Diego Osorio launched the Lobos1707. He has worked with brands like Ciroc Vodka and Deleon Tequila. Lobos’s 1707 popularity increased after famous American basketball player Lebron James announced he was joining the Lobos 1707.

In Spanish, Lobos means “wolves.” The brand has four expressions: Extra Anejo Tequila, Reposado Tequila, Joven Tequila, and Mezcal Artesanal. These expressions are produced in Jalisco, Mexico, and Oaxaca. 

6. NYAK Cognac

One of the booming black-owned liquor is NYAK Cognac in the United States. It’s an 1830 establishment in the sixth generation. 

Young M.A. and Trina, well-known female rappers, partnered with NYAK. The cognac has an 80-proof, delicate distilled flavor, and since its launch, it has gained popularity for its unique approach. It’s a brand that caters for African Americans.

These six liquor companies are among those black-owned that have been providing tasty products with cultural importance. Each sip, from energetic rum to creamy whisky, represents a culture, resiliency, and passion.
