You could become frustrated when you can’t get African American dermatologists who understand your African skin issues. And this has happened because of a lack of enough black dermatologists to treat black skin.
Due to the low numbers of practicing African American Dermatologists in the United States, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) decided to roll out a plan to encourage inclusion and diversity in dermatology in 2021.
Despite the few black doctors in dermatology, the ones in the profession are making a mark in this field. We have specially curated a list of 10 African American dermatologists in no particular order of merit you need to know.
1. Dr. Onyeka Obioha
Practicing in Los Angelos, California, Dr. Justine Onyeka Obioha treats skin issues on darker skin tones. She’s one of the few female doctors who specializes in skin color, hyperpigmentation, acne, cosmetic procedures, and skincare.
She’s the founder and owner of boutik dermatology and a certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Additionally, she’s a board member of Byrdie Beauty and Wellness. Her brand focuses on long-term skin solutions.
Dr. Obioha gives customized treatment regimens with options for procedural management, non-prescription, and prescription. The goal is to make you feel good in your skin.

2. Dr. Chynna Steele Johnson
Coming in second is Doctor Stele Johnson. Dr. Stele is a board-certified dermatologist based in Atlanta, Georgia. She specializes – and currently undergoing medical training- in skin, hair, and body medical care.
Her goal is to ensure your skin, hair, and body are at their best, which is critical to achieving the best cosmetic results. She also focuses on medical and cosmetic dermatology.
3. Dr. Cheryl Burgess
As a renowned board-certified dermatologist, Doctor Cheryl Burgess has expertise in advanced technology in non-invasive aesthetic procedures.
Practicing in Washington, DC, Dr. Burgress is the founder, medical director, and president of the Center for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery. She specializes in various skin solutions, including scar revision, soft tissue fillers, and cosmetic and therapeutic use of neurotoxins.

And she’s among the most experienced African American Dermatologists with 39 years in the practice. Her expertise has earned her other roles like a key opinion leader, clinical research investigator, consultant, and advisor. She’s also an inductee of the American Dermatological Association.
4. Dr. Chesahna Kindred
Another top Dermatologist you should have on your list is Dr. Kindred Chesahna. She founded the Kindred Hair & Skin Center based in Columbia, Maryland.
Dr. Kindred is a board-certified dermatologist specializing in hair and scalp disorders and cosmetic dermatology. She treats traumatic hair disorders and conditions that affect people with skin color.
Within the dermatological field, Dr. Kindred is the founder and president of Onyx Medical Society. And that’s not all; she’s the chair of the National Medical Association- Dermatology division and a member of the Women’s Dermatological Society, among other renowned positions.

5. Dr. Elyse Love
Elyse Love specializes (but is not limited to) in acne, cosmetic and medical dermatology. Dr. Love is board-certified and currently practices at Glamderm in New York City. In addition, she’s also a skin advisor at Blue Mercy and a cohost at beautycuriouspod.
When she’s not in the office, Dr. Love, a skincare influencer, shares skincare advice and product recommendations on her Instagram stories. Her skincare philosophy is to make skincare simple, enjoyable, and effective.
6. Dr. Ryan Turner
Practicing in New York, Dr. Ryan Turner is a Harvard-trained and certified dermatologist. His specialization is cosmetic, general, and surgical dermatology and laser surgery.
Dr. Turner leverages the latest scientific research to manage various dermatological concerns. He’s also interested in cosmetic treatments like Botox and Dermal Fillers. These rejuvenate aging skin.
He owns Turner Dermatology and is an Albert Einstein College of Medicine assistant professor. He is also a former Director of Dermatological and laser Surgery at Montefiore Medical Centre.

7. Dr. Uchenna Okereke
Doctor Uchenna Okereke is a certified medical and domestic dermatologist with vast experience in clinical, pharmaceutical, and research medicine. She currently practices in Canton, Massachusetts, and has affiliations with multiple hospitals.
Dr. Okereke is a part-time dermatologist at APDerm, which focuses on treatment for various skin conditions, including surgical, cosmetic, and general dermatology.
8. Dr. Ife Rodney
Dr. Ife Rodney is a trained dermatologist from Howard University College of Medicine with over 16 years of experience in practice.
She specializes in general dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, dermatologic surgery, and dermatopathology. The doctor is also a laser expert with extensive experience in cosmetic skin procedures, skin cancer, excision, and other skin conditions.
Dr. Rodney is the founder and Medical Director at Eternal Dermatology and Aesthetic Center. She also practices dermatology in Fulton, Maryland, and has affiliations with Washington Dc Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
9. Dr. Charles Eagan
He was labeled as “the Top Doctor” by Mpls/st. Paul magazine. According to Black Enterprise Magazine, Dr. Charles Eagan Crutchfield is “One of America’s 10 Leading Dermatologists.” Castle Conolly Guide also considers him “America’s Top Doctor.” Dr. Eagan is the only dermatologist named the “Best Doctor for Women” by the Minnesota Monthly survey.
He’s a Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science graduate with over 20 years of experience in dermatology. His expertise includes:
