Sport is one thing that brings the World together. It is a language that most people understand irrespective of color, race, and religion. Undoubtedly, there is a huge market for sports brands all around the world. Big names like Nike, Puma, Adidas, Under Armour etc are very famous in all communities.
When it comes to African Americans, there is no doubt that they are sporty people. They are built that way. Look around and you will see that most of the athletes in all the sports hail from the black community. Even if you are not into sports, you must have some sort of gym wear at home? No? Be it the fact that Nike has included many black athletes to endorse their product, or they are doing so much for the black community, Nike is highly popular amongst African Americans. People like Michael Jordan, Penny Hardaway, Jason Kidd and Bo Jackson have endorsed Nike over the years. Another reason for the brand’s popularity can be sheer high quality. Since 1985, they have worked with many Black sportsmen to target the Black youth. It started with the Air Jordan’s and is still going strong.
When it comes to giving back to the black community, Nike does not shy away from doing so. Recently, Nike, Michael Jordan, Converse and Jordan Brand together contributed 140 million dollars over 10 years to invest in organizations that work for economical empowerment, social justice and education. All of this will happen for the Black Americans which included African Americans.
This combined investment will be done in supporting both local communities and will be carried out on a strategic national level.
Another sports brand popular amongst African Americans is Adidas. Most of the sales of the company are due to the association it has with Black superstars. This shows it is a niche they have and want to target. This is the reason why it is a popular sports brand in the eyes of African Americans.
Its association with Blacks started as early as the 1980’s when the group RUN-DMC wrote a song “My Adidas”. Since then, many stars like Candice Parker, James Harden, Kanye West and even Beyoncé.
Over four years, Adidas has promised to give 20 million US dollars to the Black communities residing in the US. In the next half-decade, it will give 50 scholarships to the Black and African American employees they have. It will also increase the total number of Black employees to 30%
This shows how both sports brands are working tirelessly towards helping and improving the African American and black communities in general. This is one of the many reasons why both brands are so popular in the community.
