Rafael Nadal vs Roger Federer, 2008
Former player Roger Federer had won five of the last Wimbledon titles. In 2007, he beat Rafael Nadal, and they developed a rivalry. This rematch took four hours and 48 minutes, the second-longest Wimbledon finals match. Nadal won the game 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (6-8), 9-7, which is why it tops our Wimbledon finals list.

Bjorn Borg vs John McEnroe, 1980
Bjorn Borg had won the last four Wimbledon finals and was looking to seal his fifth. John McEnroe was ranked second in the world and won the 1979 U.S. Open. Their 22-minute tiebreaker in the fourth set was by far the most exciting factor in the game. Although McEnroe saved four set points, it wasn’t enough to beat Borg, who won the tie 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (16-18), 8-6.
Goran Ivanisevic vs Patrick Rafter, 2001
Goran Ivanisevic was unseeded and received a wildcard entry into the tournament. He became the first player with these credentials to win a grand slam. The crowds at the game were the fiercest experienced at Center Court, and Goran benefited from their presence. He won the game 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6, 9-7.

Margaret Court vs Billie Jean King, 1970
Margaret Court and Billie Jean King produced the longest women’s singles at Wimbledon in terms of games. In two sets, both played 46 games, 14-12, 11-9. Both players carried injuries in the game but still gave fans something to cheer and remember. Margaret Court triumphed over King 14–12, 11–9 to win the finals.
Venus Williams vs Lindsay Davenport, 2005
This is the longest match in women’s Wimbledon history. In two hours and 45 minutes, the players produced a final for the ages. Williams beat all odds, arriving at Wimbledon as the lowest-seed player and ranked 16th in the world. Davenport was the world’s number one. She saved a match point in the second set to win the tie 4-6, 7-6, 9-7.

Novak Djokovic vs Roger Federer, 2019
This match had everything a classic would have, and it’s the reason why tennis fans rank it as one of the best Wimbledon finals ever. Federer became the oldest player to compete in a final since 1974. He beat nemesis Rafael Nadal in an enthralling semifinal and was waiting on Djokovic, who was in great form. The game went down to the wire, the Serb winning in the fifth set 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 13-12 (7-3).

Arthur Ashe vs Jimmy Conors, 1975
This was a historic match for the African American community in tennis. Arthur Ashe won the match in four sets, 6-1, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, and became the first black man to win Wimbledon and is still the only one. Connors was the overwhelming favorite to win the game, but Ashe’s fast-paced game and going for angles surprised Conor, who couldn’t keep up. You can’t review the best Wimbledon Finals without including Ashe’s landmark victory.

Suzanne Lenglen vs Dorthea Lambert, 1919
A 20-year-old Suzanne Lenglen faced a 40-year-old Dorthea Lambert, a seven-time Wimbledon champion. The format of play was different at the time, which saw Lambert automatically enter the championship draw. After winning the main draw, the two faced each other. Lambert got the chance to win the match at 40-15, 6-5 but Lenglen saved two match points and won the final 10-8, 4-6, 9-7.
Steffi Graff vs Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, 1995
Both players didn’t have the fiercest rivalry, but still played in one of the unforgettable Wimbledon finals. Both shared the world number one spot six times, which tells you that their level of play was high. The third set was the most engrossing play. Graff and Vicario were tied at 5-5, and played the 11th game for 20 minutes, making 13 deuces. Graff won the final 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
