People worldwide celebrate Human Rights Day on December 10th to mark the anniversary of adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This celebration usually features seminars and public meetings, cultural performances and events, and many other educational activities.

Human Rights Day became officially recognized in 1950. This was after the United Nations (UN) General Assembly passed resolution 423 (V) that invited all interested organizations and states to mark the observance on December 10.

Each year, Human Rights Day comes with a special theme that draws attention to a specific stage of the struggle to uphold human rights. The theme for 2020 was “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All,” while that of 2023 is “Consolidating and Sustaining Human Rights Culture into the Future.”

4 Reasons Why African Descendants Should Celebrate Human Rights Day

Here are four reasons why black people should join the rest of the world to mark the celebration.

Promotion of Equality and Dignity

Human Rights Day was established to promote and advocate for the fundamental rights of every individual, regardless of age, race, or color. When we recognize and honor them, we affirm the value of each person, regardless of race, gender, religion, or background.

It’s a celebration that ensures that every person receives equal rights and opportunities. This helps create a world with no discrimination.

Protection of Freedoms

Human Rights Day promotes the protection of basic freedoms, including freedom of speech, assembly, and religion. Protection of basic freedom will allow black people to express themselves, practice their beliefs, and assemble peacefully.

These freedoms form the pillars of democratic societies. They’re the vital elements that build a balanced society where everyone’s voice is heard, respected, and valued.

Improvement of Social Justice

The improvement of social justice is at the heart of the celebration. It champions the continuous fight against discrimination and inequality. This observance is an essential tool used in addressing systemic injustices, advocating for fairness, and fighting against the marginalization of some groups.

Celebrating this event is a way for the black community to acknowledge the continuous efforts of activists, organizations, and individuals working tirelessly to eradicate discrimination and create a more just and equitable world.

How to Celebrate Human Rights Day

There are several ways that you can mark this celebration. Here are three common ways to participate come 10 December:

Create an Awareness and Promote the Event

One way to participate in this celebration is to promote the event and let others know about it. You can promote the Human Rights Day celebration using word of mouth or your social media handles.

All you have to do is to write about it and share materials relating to the event. You can also buy a branded t-shirt from Amazon to wear.

Give Donations

Besides promoting the event, you can also give donations to non-governmental organizations that are committed to fighting for fundamental human rights. All you have to do is look within your locality and fund important activities that promote human rights.

Human Rights include the right to freedom from slavery and torture, life and liberty, the right to work and education, and freedom of opinion and expression. On 10 December, these rights are celebrated worldwide.
