The Origins of Barack Obama’s Playlist Summer
Every year, Former President of the United States Barack Obama releases his summer playlist, titled “Barack Obama’s Summer Playlist”. His first came in 2015, after his partnership with Spotify, in a bid to make politics more available to the youth.
The songs were released in two batches: “day” and “night.” Each list contained 20 songs and was available to stream on Spotify. The partnership continued until 2016, when he released “daytime” and “nighttime” playlists. As part of the deal, former First Lady Michelle Obama released her “Girl Power Picks” for the National Day of the Girl.

2017 and 2018
Obama’s partnership with Spotify ended in the summers of 2017 and 2018. Consequently, he did not share a playlist with his followers. In a twist, he shared his favourites during the holiday season to spread cheer among his fans during the Christmas Season.

A Renewed Partnership in 2019
In 2019, Obama signed a deal with Spotify to return his playlist to the platform. This time, he and Michelle are responsible for curating the Obamas Summer Playlist list. The playlist will be advertised and officially released on 26 August 2019. Some songs that made it into his 2019 summer playlist include:

- “Not” by Big Thief
- “Go DJ” by Kaytranada feat. Sir
- “Juice” by Lizzo
- “Redesigning Women” by The Highwomen
In 2020, he released songs in the same format. This is true for 2021 until today. He posts his list on X(formerly Twitter) and Instagram, and the songs are curated in a Playlist on Spotify.
