Asamoah Gyan might not have won any international trophies with Ghana but he’s still one of the most decorated African footballers. His career lasted 22 years. Gyan played club football in Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Ghana’s Top Goalscorer

Asamoah Gyan was a dependable striker for club and country. He showed his tactical prowess in front of goal every time he played. In his 109 appearances for the Black Stars, he scored 51 goals, which makes him the country’s top goal scorer.

Ghana’s Second Highest Scorer at the AFCON

Until 2022, Asamoah Gyan was the Black Stars’ top scorer at the Africa Cup of Nations. He scored eight goals. Andre Ayew became the new top scorer with ten goals.

Ghana’s Player of the Decade

In 2021, the veteran striker was voted Ghana’s Player of the Decade at the Ghana Football Awards. The vote looked at his performances for the years 2010 to 2020.

Highest Africa Scorer at the World Cup

Gyan had quite the exploits at the World Cup. He scored at three tournaments in 2006, 2010 and 2014. His first goal at the World Cup came against the Czech Republic. At the 2010 World Cup, he scored three and two goals in Brazil against Germany and Portugal.

First Ghanaian Player to Score at the World Cup

In 2006, Ghana played in its first-ever FIFA World Cup. After they lost to Italy in their opening game, the Black Stars won their game against the Czech Republic 2-0. Gyan scored the opener and recorded the country’s first goal at the tournament.

Second Most Capped Player for Ghana

Before November 2022, Asamoah Gyan was the most capped player for the team. He had 109 appearances but was surpassed by Andre Ayew, who now has 112 caps. Gyan made his international debut in 2003 and played his last game in 2019.

Scoring in 9 Successive Tournaments

Gyan was the first player to score in every international tournament he played in – 2008 to 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and 2006, 2010 & 2014 FIFA World Cup. The only other player to have matched this record is Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

Youngest Scorer at World Cup

In 2006, Asamoah Gyan became the youngest scorer for the Black Stars. At 17 years and 362 days, the striker netted a goal against Somalia in a World Cup qualifier to secure the record. 

The football legend retired in 2022 at the age of 37. He’ll still be involved in football in some capacity. One of his most memorable moments is his penalty miss at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. A moment of anguish that’ll always accompany his legacy.
