The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will have a new look. Initially, the winners of continental tournaments from each confederation competed against each other for the ultimate prize. However, the 2025 edition will expand from six to 32 teams. FIFA President Gianni Infantino first floated the idea of an expanded tournament in 2016.

Who Is the Host of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025?

The United States will host the new 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which will serve as a test run before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The host cities have yet to be announced, but reports indicate that the event will take place on the East Coast for broadcasting reasons.

What Is the New Format of the FIFA Club World Cup?

The new format features 32 teams, unlike the previous six, who were winners of their continent’s club competition. The last format was a knock-out tournament, and the new format includes the knock-out and group stage.

The 32 teams will be in eight groups of four. The best two teams will proceed to the knock-out phase, the event format after the groups. There is no third-place play-off.

What Are the Dates of the Event?

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will occur between 15 June and 13 July 2025.

How Do Teams Qualify for the Tournament?

The 32 teams come from the six confederations – AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA. Europe will have the most teams, with 12; South America will have six; Africa, Asia, and CONCACAF will have four teams, and Oceania and the host country will have one each.

Here’s a summary:

  • Europe – 12 UEFA teams. Four via the champions pathway (UEFA Champions League) and eight via a ranking pathway.
  • Africa – 4 CAF teams. Three via the champions pathway (CAF Champions League) and one via a ranking pathway.
  • North and Central America, Caribbean—4 Concacaf teams, all via the champions pathway (Concacaf Champions Cup).
  • Asia – 4 AFC teams. Three via the champions pathway (AFC Champions League) and one via a ranking pathway.
  • South America – 6 CONMEBOL teams. Four via the champions pathway (CONMEBOL Libertadores) and two via a ranking pathway.
  • Oceania – 1 OFC team. Via ranking pathway.
  • Host country – 1 team.
