There’s more to basketball than the action you see on the court. Preparation for a game starts long before a team steps out, and these contributions are the building blocks for success. When you coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA), you’re under pressure to deliver results. This is a skill that Mike Brown developed. He worked in a couple of coaching positions since 1997, after he played for 11 seasons. Let’s look at Mike Brown’s coaching record.

Mike Brown’s Coaching Career

If you see Mike Brown’s coaching record, you’ll understand why he’s considered one of the best. He worked in several positions in the NBA before he got his first coaching job. He was an assistant coach in three teams and an associate head coach at Golden State Warriors.

This was a learning period for him, and during this time, he won four NBA Championships: 2003, 2017, 2018 & 2022. In between the years, three teams hired Mike Brown. Here’s how he performed:

Sacramento Kings (2022 to Present)

Sacramento Kings is the third team in Mike Brown’s coaching record. In 2022, he returned to the side of the court as head coach of the Sacramento Kings. The team was experiencing a series of poor results and fired its former head coach, Luke Walton and the interim coach, Alvin Gentry.

During his first press conference, he shared his intentions of winning and bringing the spark back to the team. True to his words, at the end of the 2023 NBA campaign, the Sacramento Kings qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2006. The team finished the season on a high and the expectations for the 2023/24 season are higher than ever before.

Los Angeles Lakers (2011 to 2013)

The Los Angeles Lakers is one of the three teams coached by Mike Brown. In 2011, the Lakers hired him on a three-year contract worth $18.25 million, with an option to extend it for a fourth year. In his first season, the team was eliminated in the conference semifinals.

To compete for the ultimate price, the top brass added Steve Nash and Dwight Howard to an already star-studded lineup of the late Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace and Pau Gasol. However, the Los Angeles Lakers struggled.

They had a poor record, losing to the Portland Trailblazers, Los Angeles Clippers and the Utah Jazz. Part of the reason why Mike Brown found it hard to manage the team was the players’ egos. Sources claim that the players never trusted his tactics and resolved to use other tactics. Unfortunately, this led to Mike Brown’s dismissal in 2012.

Mike Brown’s first coaching job was with the Cleveland Cavaliers. This happened when LeBron James was at the start of his professional career and joined a team that last made the playoffs in 1998. Brown led the Cavaliers to its first playoffs in seven years. Although they didn’t win the championships, it was a sign of things to come.

In 2007, the team played in the NBA Championship finals for the first time in its history but lost the game to San Antonio Spurs. Throughout his time, he won individual accolades, Coach of the Year and Coach of the Month, but was unsuccessful in his attempts to bring the championship to Cleveland.

Although he was eventually fired, Brown returned to the side in 2013. The team struggled to compete for the championships, and Brown’s return was expected to revamp their form.

However, he had little time to turn things around, and at the end of the 2014 season, Brown was fired for a second time. Reports suggest the team desperately wanted to keep LeBron James, whose ambition was to win the championship.

Despite his unsuccessful stint at the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers, Mike Brown has a solid coaching record. He has the chance to prove he can do more than he’s done before at the Sacramento Kings. Going by his first season, it seems he might be able to achieve that.
