Kenya’s Football Federation (FKF) has corrected its initial statement, which announced bans of 365 years for two players, sparking a media frenzy on Thursday.

In a statement, the FKF confirmed it erred in its original report and that both players—Bernard Oelle and Ebrahim Nganga—will be out for only a year.

Both players were suspended for a year for a “double registration,” as confirmed by the FKF.

“Bernard Oelle (Santos Hotspurs) was also registered as Maira Oelle at Nairobi FC. He was first registered at Nairobi FC,” read the statement.

“Ebrahim Hassan Nganga (Santos Hotspurs) was also registered as Ebrahim Hassan at Kirinyaga Stars. He was first registered at Kirinyaga Stars in 2020.”

Initially, Kenyan football was in the news owing to FKF’s error, with news outlets having a field day.

The FKF later stated, “We wish to inform the public, stakeholders, and the football fraternity of an important clarification regarding a recent disciplinary communication that was issued concerning two players.

“In the earlier statement, it was indicated that the two players, namely Ebrahim Hassan Nganga and Bernard Maira Oelle, had been banned for 365 years. We would like to clarify that this was a typographical error. The correct disciplinary sanction imposed on the players is 365 days.

“We apologize for the error and any confusion, concern, or misunderstanding it may have caused among players, clubs, partners, and the general public.”
