How to Start a Kitchen Garden

If you don’t know where to begin, consider the following:

  1. Location. Find a place that receives at least six to eight hours of sunlight every day, has good drainage and access to water.
  2. Decide what to plant. Ideally, this should be produced so that your family consumes it. That said, start with easy-to-plant and add as you progress.
  3. Loosen the soil with a garden fork to improve aeration and root growth. If the soil is poor, create raised beds for better control and drainage.
  4. Create a garden layout. Keep the taller plant at the back and the smaller at the front. If you have a small space, consider vertical gardening or container planting.

Things to Remember When Managing a Kitchen Garden

  • Avoid overcrowding because it causes poor growth and pest problems.
  • Avoid planting the same crop in the same spot every season. Crop rotation prevents soil nutrient depletion and reduces pest problems.
  • Spread a layer of organic mulch like straw or oat chips to retain moisture, suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature.
  • Keep the soil moist and not waterlogged. The best time to water is early morning to minimize evaporation. Remove weeds and dead leaves regularly to promote growth.
