What Causes Seasonal Hair Loss?

Unknown factors cause seasonal hair loss but research shows that most people experience this during the late summer and early autumn months. This is down to the reduction of the hair follicles on the anagen which is the growing phase of the hair follicle.

The other cycles include catagen when the hair starts to transition by detaching from the bulb to shed. The telogen is when 15% of old hair rests as the new begins growing, and the exogen is when the new hair expels the old strands from the scalp, resulting in excessive hair shedding.

Other reasons for seasonal hair loss include exposure to ultraviolet rise which damages the hair follicles leading to brittle hair strands. Hormonal fluctuation can also lead to seasonal hair loss. When there is less light, the body might produce the sleep hormone melatonin leading to the shedding of more hair.

Additionally, diet and nutrition are crucial for hair growth. However, in the summer, when people are vacationing and moving out and about, they tend to indulge in foods that don’t add nutritional value, hence lacking proper nutrients for hair growth.

Stress can lead to hair loss as it pushes it towards the shedding phase when the hair stops growing and causes it to shed. Furthermore, activities like swimming in chlorine pools and the ocean strip hair of its natural oils, leading it to strip off.

You can put an end to this cycle by practising the following:

When your hair is exposed to sunlight, it damages the hair follicles. Additionally, dust and pollution heighten its chances of growth. Therefore, covering your hair protects it from damage. Wash it regularly to remove the dust and dandruff brought about by humidity.

If you regularly experience seasonal hair loss, cutting your hair often will reduce the amount of split ends and dry hair you deal with, helping it to stay at its healthiest. As a result, it will lead to more hair growth.
