1. C.R. Patterson (1833–1910)
C.R. Patterson and J.P. Lowe founded C.R. Patterson and Sons Corporation, making it the first automaker owned by an African American. They started by making high-end horse-drawn carriages before switching to cars. Future generations of African American business owners in the automotive sector were made possible by Patterson’s dedication to success and pursuit of perfection.
2. Garrett Morgan (1877–1963)
The prolific inventor Garrett Morgan significantly improved automotive safety. He created the three-position traffic signal, significantly enhancing traffic control and road safety. Morgan also created the safety hood, a forerunner of the gas mask that shielded firefighters from smoke inhalation. His innovations changed traffic safety and still affect the automotive sector today.

3. Homer B. Roberts (1885–1952)
Roberts was famous for being the most successful Black automotive dealer. He was the first African American car dealership owner. He owned the Roberts Company Motor Mart with a lot of success. His company helped the African American community, especially first-time car owners, secure cars. Roberts also made a lot of sales for Rickenbacker in the 1920s.
4. Wendell Scott (1921–1990)
Wendell Scott created history when he became the first Black American to participate in NASCAR‘s top division. Scott endured racism and adversity but was nonetheless recognized as one of the sport’s trailblazers. And this is thanks to his remarkable driving abilities and fortitude.
He overcame several obstacles and persisted, winning a NASCAR race in 1963. Future black drivers in the professional racing industry can now access Scott’s ground-breaking accomplishment.
5. Richard B. Spikes (1878–1963)
Prolific innovator Richard B. Spikes made important advancements in the automotive sector. The automatic gear shift, automatic directional signs, and a safety braking system were only a few of the automotive innovations for which he was awarded multiple patents.
Vehicle efficiency, safety, and functionality were all improved by Spikes’ inventions. His commitment to automotive engineering and inventiveness continues to influence the sector.
6. George Washington Carver (1864–1943)

George Washington Carver, famous for his contributions to agricultural research, also made progress in automotive materials. Carver experimented with using agricultural items like peanuts and soybeans to create sustainable automobile materials.
His study cleared the path for environmentally friendly and renewable vehicle components, lowering dependency on conventional, non-renewable materials.

7. McKinley Thompson Jr. (1922-2006)
The accomplished automobile designer McKinley Thompson Jr. promoted inclusion and diversity in the sector. He was the first African American to serve as an automotive designer at Ford Motor Company.
Here, he contributed to numerous initiatives, including the legendary Ford Mustang. Aspiring designers from all backgrounds have been motivated by Thompson’s talent and commitment to advancing inclusion and diversity in vehicle design.
8. Charlie Wiggins (1897-1979)
Charlie Wiggins also referred to as the “Negro Speed King,” was a pioneer in African American motorsports. Early in the 20th century, Wiggins competed in and won a number of races, demonstrating his outstanding driving abilities and tenacity.
He started the Gold and Glory Sweepstakes, a race that drew notable African American drivers. Wiggins’ accomplishments in motorsports paved the way for more African Americans to be represented and given opportunities in the racing industry.
These exceptional black automotive pioneers broke racial boundaries and changed the automobile scene, leaving a lasting impression on the industry.
