Hygiene is an important part of intimacy. This includes your oral health. If you suffer from bad breath, probably your intimacy levels aren’t what you’d have liked. Caring about what others think of you is unavoidable, especially in relationships.

So, some people can avoid you, thus hurting your self-esteem. If you’re in a relationship, your partner could withdraw or hold their breath when they’re around you. They could be telling you directly or indirectly to get treatment.

Live in Isolation

Bad breath can cause social alienation. People will maintain a larger distance than usual from you when interacting. Others will constantly rub their noses or cut short their time with you. Additionally, people may avoid sitting near you.

Makes Dating Harder

First impressions matter and while we can’t tell how good or bad someone’s breath is from miles away, we can when we draw closer. If you have oral malodor, all that excitement of meeting will die before you even sit and have a drink. Some people will never want to see you again after the first meeting. So, you’ll find it harder to date and even move on.

Leads to Feelings of Disgust

Causes of Bad Breath

There are several causes of bad breath and you can easily avoid some to solve the issue.

  • Poor dental hygiene. If you don’t brush your teeth at least twice a day, you’re likely to suffer from bad breath. Food particles remain between your teeth and can trigger a bacterium called plaque.
  • If you’re fond of garlic or onions, you’ll carry their strong smell wherever you go. When this happens, brush your teeth immediately and drink lots of water.
  • Dirty tongue. If you brush your teeth but don’t clean your tongue, you’ll end up with a foul smell. To combat that, clean the back of your tongue every time and guggle some water to freshen up your throat.
  • Health problems can worsen your oral condition by affecting the nose, lungs, and other body parts. These diseases include diabetes, sinus infections, and chronic bronchitis, among others.
  • Gum disease will cause bad breath. If you have this, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Lack of enough saliva causes a dry mouth (xerostomia) and mouth odor because the mouth can’t clean itself. This means you have salivary gland problems that lead to the decrease of saliva, so you need to get treatment.
  • Tobacco users tend to have oral health problems induced by cigarettes or cigars that leave them prone to diseases, which eventually lead to bad breath.

Preventing Bad Breath

It’s easy to prevent bad breath rather than deal with it. These are the simple and practical things you should do.

  • Practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice using fluoride toothpaste to remove food particles.
  • Use a mouthwash. It kills bacteria and can deal with bad breath.
  • Visit the dentist regularly for checkups.
  • Eat healthy foods to keep the saliva flowing. For example, carrots and apples make you chew and are good for this. Sugar-free gum and sugar-free candies will also keep your mouth moist.
  • Drink water regularly.
  • Avoid smoking.

Bad breath will ruin your relationships if you don’t act quickly. People can only tolerate you for so long before getting tired. If it’s a health problem, visit a healthcare professional for urgent help and take the steps outlined above.
