The “Africa’s Business Heroes” (ABH) is an annual competition organized by the Jack Ma Foundation, which aims to identify, support, and inspire African entrepreneurs who are making a positive impact in their communities.

The ABH initiative, sponsored by the Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Philanthropy, selects ten outstanding entrepreneurs from a pool of finalists to be recognized as the top entrepreneurs for that particular year. These top finalists compete for a share of US$1.5 million in grant money to support their businesses and endeavors.

Here’s a list of Top 6  Africa’s Business Heroes 2023 from a pool of 50 finalists: 

1. Kenya

Alex Musyoka- Viebeg Medical and Dental Supplies Ltd

Viebeg Technologies, founded in 2018 by CEO Tobias Reiter and CCO Alex Musyoka, aims to address the shortage of quality medical supplies in Africa through AI-driven solutions. The company has established a commercial presence in Kenya, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, serving 500+ customers.

2. Ghana

Andrew Takyi-Appiah Zeepay Ghana Limited

Zeepay is a rapidly growing fintech company focused on using digital technology to connect various digital assets such as mobile money wallets, cards, ATMs, bank accounts, and digital tokens with International Money Transfer Operators. They aim to improve financial inclusion and enable seamless payments, subscriptions, international airtime, and refugee assistance. 

3. Botswana

Matlhogonolo MongwaKalafhi Medical Center

Kalafhi Medical Center is a citizen-owned healthcare establishment dedicated to providing high-quality medical services accessible to all, promoting overall health and well-being in the nation. 

With four branches in and around Gaborone, they aim to expand and create a hospital to become a healthcare hub in the region. The envisioned hospital will offer specialized services, including cardiology, neurology, oncology, and more, along with visiting specialists to cater to diverse medical needs.

4. Morocco

Lotfi DarragiReBootKamp

​​ReBootKamp (RBK) is a training provider based in Tunisia, offering full-time and part-time software engineering programs. The curriculum covers advanced full-stack development, including JavaScript, MongoDB, React, Angular, and NodeJS. No academic prerequisites are needed, but applicants must be at least 18 years old and have basic proficiency in English (A2 to B1 level).

5. South Africa

Gareth ThomsonResolute Education

Resolute Education, founded in 2017, has achieved significant success, evolving from a small math tutoring business at local schools to a flourishing company. 

It offers Robotics and Coding solutions in over 100 schools nationwide. 

Co-founders Rajesh Ramakrishnan and Gareth Thomson are passionate about making a positive impact on South Africa’s educational landscape. 

6. Sierra Leone

Hamza HashimCapitol Foods Limited

The selection process is likely to be rigorous, considering factors such as the impact of the entrepreneurs’ businesses on their local communities, their mission-driven approach, and the viability of their ventures.

The Grand Finale, scheduled for later in the year, will allow these top finalists to present their businesses to a panel of esteemed business people. During this event, the final ranking and recognition of the “Top 50” entrepreneurs will be revealed and celebrated for their accomplishments and contributions to Africa’s entrepreneurship landscape.
