To come up with these rankings, researchers ask participants to evaluate the quality of life from variables such as social support, freedom, generosity, GDP Per Capita, healthy life expectancy, and perceptions of corruption. From this, a pattern of increased kindness and generosity emerged.

Despite the positive news, Africa’s biggest economies reported a fall in rankings, including Nigeria (from 11th to 19th), and Kenya from 20 to 25. Recent political tensions were the result of such drops as young people took to the streets to express their frustrations with their governments.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the list, Sierra Leone (146), Zimbabwe (143), Malawi (144), Botswana (142) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (141).
