The Masters is one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments held at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. It’s known for its traditions including the green jacket, champions dinner, no smartphone rule and white boiler suits for the caddies. Given this beauty and tradition, it’s also good to understand where things began. So, why is it called the Masters?
Who Started the Masters?
The Masters was the brain child of former golfer Bobby Jones and investment dealer Clifford Roberts. Building this course was Jones’ dream as he wanted to leave a legacy in the game. In 1931, the construction of the course, formerly known as Fruitland Nurseries, began and officially opened in 1932.

When did the Masters Begin?
Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts began hosting the annual event at the club in 1934 with the first Masters tournament taking place on March 22, 1934. However, in the beginning, the event wasn’t called the Masters.
Robert wanted the name Masters but Jones disagreed so in its first five years, the event was called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. That changed in 1939, and the event was called The Masters.

Who Won the First Masters?
Horton Smith won the first Masters by one stroke when it was called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. Ralph Guldahl was the winner of the first edition under the Masters name.
When did the Green Jacket Presentation Begin?
Since 1937, green jackets were handed to Augusta National Golf Club members. The idea to give the jacket to the winners is tied to two stories. Firstly, Bobby Jones was at dinner in Liverpool and the club captains wore a green jacket as a symbol of their position. On the other hand, Roberts thought it’s a way to identify club members and signalling to the waiters who received the check at dinner.

How did the Event Become Popular?
Bobby Jones was one of the most famous golfers of his day, particularly after winning the “grand slam’, made of the U.S. and British Open and Amateur titles. It’s only natural that a tournament he established would benefit from his popularity.
