Egypt
Egypt has the strongest military in Africa with a power index of 0.3427. It operates with a budget of $4.4 billion and has an active troop capacity of over 440,000 and 800,000 reserve. Its equipment includes modern tankers, helicopters, submarines and more. The Egyptian military was involved in the first Arab-Israeli war, the Suez Crisis, the North Yemen Civil War, and the Six-Day War.

Algeria
Algeria ranks second in the strongest military in Africa with a power index of 0.3589. Its budget is estimated to cost over $10 billion for its over 130 active troops and 15,000 reserves. The country has access to modern military equipment including tankers, and artillery. The Algerian military has been involved in the San Wars, the Algerian War of Independence, and the October War.
Nigeria
The West African nation comes in as the third strongest Military in Africa. It has a power index of 0.5771 and runs with a military budget of over $3.160 billion. The country has an active personnel of over 230,000 active troops that are serving in different countries. Some of the wars they have been involved in include the Nigerian Civil War, the Chadian-Nigerian War, and the Nigerian Civil War.

South Africa
Fourth on the list is South Africa with a ranking power index of 0.6889. Its budget cost about $3.39 billion with an active military personnel of over 70,000 and a reserve personnel of over 29,000. Some of the equipment it has includes modern tanks, artillery and fighter jets. Some of the wars it has fought include the Anglo-Boers War, the South African border, and World War I.
Ethiopia
Ethiopia ranks fifth in the strongest military in Africa’s power rankings. It has a power ranking of 0.9305, a budget of $1.2226 billion, an active military personnel of over 500,000 and a reserve personnel of 138,000. Its supreme commander is President Taye Atske Selassie, commander-in-chief is Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Minister of Defense Aisha Mohammed.

Angola
Angola’s 1.0961 power ranking makes it the sixth-strongest military in Africa. It has a spending power of about $1.62 billion, and active personnel of 107,000. Its commander-in-chief is President João Lourenço, minister of National Defence and Homeland Veterans João Ernesto dos Santos, and Chief of General Staff General António Egídio de Sousa Santos.

Morocco
The North African nation takes the seventh spot as the strongest military in Africa. It has more than 17.33 million in military resources involving 13,710 military vehicles, 306 towed artillery elements, 1,564 tanks, 565 self-propelled artillery elements, and 208 rocket artillery elements. The military has fought several wars including Ifni War, Sand War, Six-Day War, and the Gulf War.
Democratic Republic of Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo has the eighth strongest military in Africa. It has a power index of 1.3111, active personnel of over 100,000 active troops – 80,000 Army; 7,000 Navy; 2,000 Air Force; 10,000 Republican Guard. In 2023, its military budget was the highest worldwide, spending $794 million, a 105% rise compared to 2022. Perhaps it’s understandable considering the ongoing war and the instability in the country.

Sudan
Sudan is another country that invests heavily in its military, considering its long-standing war issues. Currently, there is an ongoing war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Its cumulative active personnel stand at 190,000 personnel including tanks, aircraft, and artillery. According to the Global Fire Power, its power index is 1.4756.
Libya
Libya has the strongest military in Africa with a power ranking of 1.4449. In 2023, it spent about $3.5 billion. It has fought several wars including the Chad-Libya War and the Egyptian-Libyan War, as well as the ongoing civil war. Its commander in chief is Mohamed al-Menfi and its minister of defence is Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh.
