For an accolade that carries so much prestige, it surprises many that it’s worth only $1. Additionally, Oscar winners aren’t allowed to resell their pieces, unless the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences refuses to buy it back first for $1. 

This regulation was adopted in 1950, to retain the value of the award, and not make it an easily tradeable commodity.

“Award winners shall not sell or otherwise dispose of the Oscar statuette, nor permit it to be sold or disposed of by operation of law, without first offering to sell it to the Academy for the sum of $1.00. This provision shall apply also to the heirs and assigns of Academy Award winners who may acquire a statuette by gift or bequest.”

Can Someone Buy an Oscar?

Before the regulation was stipulated in 1950, people bought the award. For example, the late Michael Jackson bought the Best Picture Oscar awarded to producer David Selznick in 1939 for “Gone with the Wind.” The King of Pop for $1.5 million.

  • In 2011, Beatrice Welles, the daughter of Orson Welles, sold his Oscar Award for Best Original Screenplay for $862,000.
  • Director Steven Spielberg won two Academy Awards won by Bette Davis and Clark Gable for $758,000 and $607,500.
  • In 2003, magician David Copperfield won the 1943 Oscar Award given to director Michael Curtiz for $231,500.

Is Oscar Award Real Gold?

No, the Academy Awards uses gold plating. It’s also made of different materials, including solid bronze, 24-karat gold and black metal. Due to this composition, the statuettes weigh about 8.5 pounds and stands at 13.5 inches tall.
